Grant Funds
2nd Thermal
Imaging Camera
The Commerce Fire Depart
ment recently received its sec
ond thermal imaging camera.
The department bought the
device with a $6,600 grant
received from the Georgia
Department of Community
Affairs with the help of Rep.
Tommy Benton.
The camera allows firefight
ers to see through smoke and
darkness to quickly locate vic
tims in a burning building, but
it also enables them to quickly
pinpoint sources of heat not
always readily visible in struc
tural fires.
The cameras are assigned to
the department’s two primary
response vehicles that go on
all calls inside Commerce or
in the East Jackson Fire Dis
trict.
The devices will help reduce
damages to houses caused
by spreading flames and will
aid firefighters attempting to
access fires inside walls and
rooms. The device is so sensi
tive to varying degrees of heat
that it can “see” a handprint on
a wall after someone touches
the wall.
With such a sensitivity, it can
help emergency responders
find victims ejected during
nighttime vehicle crashes, de
termine levels of liquid in cer
tain types of containers and
even track people who have
fled law enforcement officers.
