Commerce Takes 2nd At Area Duals
By Brandon Reed
The Commerce Tiger wrestling team went into last
weekend’s area duals at Landmark Christian know
ing Jefferson would be the favorite team. When
it came down to the final match, it was Jefferson
defeating Commerce 72-6.
“Both teams wrestled JV guys, so it was mostly
kind of a JV match," said Commerce wrestling coach
Kendall Love. “Neither one wanted to get anybody
hurt, or have any opportunity to get one of them in
a fight or get thrown out, so we just did that."
Commerce started out the weekend with a 72-12
win against St. Francis. The Tigers then moved on
to defeat Social Circle in the semi-final round 46-27,
before moving on to the match with Jefferson.
“I thought we wrestled well," Love said. “Going in,
we knew Jefferson was the favorite. So we knew we
had to take care of business so we could get to the
finals so we could go in at worst number two. That’s
what happened.
“We wrestled well against St. Francis and Social,
and then we wrestled a lot of JV guys against
Jefferson. We were second at the area duals last
year, and we need to go and try to win that first
round at state."
Love said the win was a team effort.
“It was good in the sense that I wanted to get
everybody on our team a match, and we were pretty
successful in doing that," he said. “Most everybody
on our team wrestled."
With the second place finish, the Tigers now
get ready to head to Macon this weekend for the
State Duals, which begin Saturday at the Macon
Coliseum. Their first match will be up against the
Blue Devils of Bremen.
Love feels like his team is in a good position.
“I feel like if we go out and compete hard, we’ll be
in it at the end with a shot to win it," he said.

JV Tigers To Host Athens Academy Saturday
The Commerce High School
junior varsity Tigers will try to
get back on the winning track
this week when they host Athens
Academy Saturday at 4:30.
The Tigers are suffering though
a three-game losing streak after
dropping a 52-38 decision
Tuesday, Dec. 18, to Franklin
County, falling 39-33 last Friday
to Jefferson, 39-33, then endur
ing another loss, 56-39, in a
rematch with Franklin County
last Saturday. Their record is 5-3.
“We came out pretty sluggish
against Franklin County and
didn’t play well early," observed
Coach Rob Brown of the first
Lion-Tiger contest.
The 12-4 disadvantage at the
end of one quarter turned into
a 30-16 halftime deficit, and the
Tigers could never close the
gap-
Brandon Romans and Demetris
Bonds led the offense, putting
up 17 and 10 points respectively.
Deon Orsborn added four and
Tyler Gamble and Tyler Adams
scored two apiece, with Sam
Purcell contributing one.
“Brandon Romans had a good
game, and so did Demetris
Bonds," Brown commented.
Against Jefferson, the Tigers
showed a little rust.
“Taking a three-week break
between games hurt us a little,"
Brown noted. “We didn’t shoot
the ball well and Jefferson did
a good job of controlling the
boards. We pulled within five
late in the game, but weren’t able
to get any closer than that.
Commerce led 9-6 after one
period, but Jefferson was atop
14-13 at the half, and after a disas
trous third quarter led 28-17.
Tyler Gamble and Anthony
Norris had a dozen points apiece
to pace the Tigers. Channing
Anderson added five, Orsborn
two and Travaris Glasper and
Tyler Adams scored one apiece.
“Tyler Gamble and Anthony
Norris both did a nice job of
making shots to keep us in the
game, and Tyler Adams played a
very tough game," said Brown.
The second time around against
Franklin County was pretty much
like the first meeting.
“We played Franklin a lot tough
er this time, but again just weren’t
able to make shots or handle the
ball when we needed to," Brown
said. “Franklin had a 13-point
lead at the half and maintained it
throughout the second half."
Brown praised the offensive
play of Romans (11 points),
Orsborn (eight) andNorris (eight).
Others scoring were Bonds, five,
Anderson, four; Glasper, two;
and Joseph Sanders, one.

Mathis (11 points) and Danielle
McCurry (seven points), the
Commerce Middle School Lady

Academy 20-17 Saturday.
Lakeview led 4-3 after one
period, but the Tigers tied it at
eight at the half, then led 15-13
after three periods.
Allie Morgan also added two
points for the victors.
The boys, meanwhile, fell
44-21 to Lakeview. Scoring for
Commerce were Chase Klugh,
eight; Jonathan Lefffew, six;
Jamir James, five; and Jonathan
Book, two.

two apiece.
For the Boys, Leffew had
