THE COMMERCE (GA) NEWS - JANUARY 16, 2008 - PAGE 3B EJCHS Basketball EJCHS Wrestling Lady Eagles To Host Union Friday East Jackson Loses To Dawson In Sub-Region Game By Brandon Reed A 53-47 loss Friday night to Dawson County left the East Jackson Lady Eagles continu ing to search for their first sub- region victory. The Eagles were scheduled to face the Banks County Lady Leopards Tuesday night. Results were not available at press time. The next chance for the Lady Eagles to get that first win is a home game Lriday against Union County. Prior to Tuesday the Panthers were 12-4 overall, and 2-0 in the region. Game time Lriday night is scheduled for 7:00. Despite the loss the Eagles stayed close against Dawson. The scored was tied at 14 at the end of the first quarter, and Dawson County held a slim lead going into the half, 23-20. By the end of the third quar ter, the score was 36-33, but the Tigers picked up 17 points in the fourth quarter to East Jackson’s 14 to seal the victory. Dynelle Todman led East Jackson in scoring with 20 points. Autumn Wilbanks scored nine, Marley Pullian seven, and Emma Turner five. Todman also led the team in rebounds with six, while Turner had five, Callie Moore four, and Terin Gillespie four. Gillespie led in assists with three, and had three steals, as did Todman. “We didn’t play an entire 32 minutes of the Dawson County game,’’ said East Jackson coach Amy Larimer. “We played a very slow first half and, even though we played much better in the second half, we had a hard time trying to battle our way back. By that point our opponent had the momentum and confidence to put us away. “We have to be able to come out of the gates playing at a high level of intensity and then we have to keep that intensity the entire game.’’ East Jackson now finds itself down two games in the sub- region. “When it comes to sub-region play, we have to take it one game at a time and try to get ourselves back into the middle of the sub-region in preparation for seeding in the region tourna ment,’’ Larimer said. “Hopefully, the second time around, we will get some wins and be able to split with a few teams.’’ Prior to Tuesday night, Larimer said the Eagles and Banks County looked to be on equal footing. “I expect a hard-fought, com petitive game between two teams that are equally matched,” she said. “One thing about our region is that every team is going to play hard and force you to do the same.’’ Marley Pullium, seen here in earlier action, scored seven points against Dawson County last week. Photo by Brandon Reed Eagles Finish Team Duals In Top Six By Brandon Reed It was a respectable showing for the East Jackson Eagles wrestling team, as it finished in sixth out of 16 teams in the area team duals at Wesleyan this weekend. The Eagles’ first match was against Holy Innocents Friday night, which they won 60 to 21. They lost their next match on Friday, against defending state champions Wesleyan, 60-11. “The score doesn’t reflect how good we did wrestling them,’’ said East Jackson coach Tommy Palmer. “I was very pleased with our wrestling, even though we lost.’’ Saturday started out very well for East Jackson. First they defeated Decatur 60-13, then advanced to win over North Oconee 48-28. “As a team, the match against North Oconee was the best solid performance we’ve put togeth er,’’ Palmer said. The Eagles’ third match of the day ended in a loss, this time to Banks County, 57-22. It was a rematch for East Jackson with the Leopards, who defeated them 54-30 at earlier in the year. “I would’ve like to seen us reduce that margin of loss, maybe even turn it into a win,’’ Palmer said. “But Coach Hanley over at Banks County has done a phenomenal job with the wrestling program over there and making sure that his kids are prepared to wrestle.’’ Palmer says the young Eagles team is starting to come together. “For a first-year team to put a program together and place in the top six in their area is definitely an accomplishment,’’ he said. “This only sets the goal for us next year to be in the top four. Who knows, maybe next year we’ll be making accom modations for a weekend in Macon.’’ East Jackson was scheduled to travel to Dawson County High School to face off against Dawson and Fannin counties Tuesday night. Results from those matches were unavailable at press time. Next up for the Eagles is the Darlington Dual Tournament at Darlington High School on Jan. 26.
