They will travel to Toccoa Feb. 8-9 to participate in the band weekend. “Two hundred students from North Georgia were selected through a rigorous audition process to perform at this event," stated David Van Buren, EJMS band director. 'These students and many others have worked hard to prepare for this prestigious experience. In addition, all three qualified to audition for the Georgia All State Band. I am proud of how these young men are representing our school and community. I would also like to thank their parents, the entire East Jackson Band Parents Organization, the East Jackson Middle School administration and faculty, and the Jackson County Board of Education for their con tinued support of our band program." Learn ISO Sight Words Kindergarteners Grace Palmer and Savannah Van Buren were recognized for knowing 150 sight words at the December Sight Word Recognition at East Jackson Elementary School. 14-Year-Old To Be 'Ambassador' To Britain Mariah Floyd, 14, has been selected to serve as a “student ambassador" through the People to People program. The East Jackson Middle School eighth grader will travel to the British Isles for three weeks this coming summer. Mariah is the daughter of Pam Floyd, Jefferson. “I am really excited about going," she said. “I’ve never trav eled before, and I know this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. This experience could open up many doors to my future. I would love to visually learn about the many diverse cultures of the world and going to the British Isles with a great program like People to People is the best way." Mariah was chosen for the pro gram as a result of a teacher nom ination or because of high scores on state tests. She will have the opportunity to earn academic credit for her studies abroad. President Dwight D. Eisenhower started the People to People pro gram in 1956, stating that com munication between ordinary people of different nations can make a difference where govern ments cannot. The first student delegation traveled to Berlin in 1963; today, student ambassadors have the opportunity to travel to 34 different countries. Benefit Fund While Mariah has high hopes of participating in the Student Ambassador program, the cost is approximately $6,000, not includ ing spending money, clothes and so forth. Mariah is from a family of four and her mother is a single parent, so she is seeking assistance in raising funds for the trip. A benefit account for dona tions has been set up at First Commerce Bank, c/o Eleene Fellers, P.O. Box 210, Commerce, GA 30529, 706-335-8250. Checks may be made out to People to People. Concert To Benefit Ugandan School Children The East Jackson Comprehensive High School branch of Schools for Schools will host a benefit concert from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, in the school auditorium to raise funds for children in Uganda. Local bands donating their time for the concert, include Fading into Forever, The Hans Device, The Awkward Romance and Audio Mischief. Tickets will be $7 at the door and T-shirts will be available for $10. In response to the 20-year war in Northern Uganda, Africa (more information at invisiblechil- dren.com), a program called Invisible Children was created to aid the children of Uganda. These chil dren are abducted to fight as soldiers and endure starvation as well as severe psychological issues. A branch of this program, Schools for Schools, aims to rebuild the schools in Northern Uganda that have been torn down because of this war. EJCHS sophomore Anna Pierce implemented the program at EJCHS. On top of this, these children aren’t able to go to school. Because EJCHS is new and fully equipped, she felt that this was the perfect school in which to raise awareness and money for Schools for Schools. The EJCHS branch of Schools for Schools has so far raised approximately $1,500 through various fund-raisers. .IVE STRONG, LIVE BOLD, LIVE NOW. DODGE. GRAB LIFE. ONLY FOR MEMBERS.
