The SPLOST revenue is contrib
uting to the surplus because rev
enue continues to outstrip expen
ditures of sales tax revenue.
In other business, the council:
•approved a budget amend
ment of $8,591 for the fire depart
ment to cover the purchase of a
thermal imaging camera funded
largely by a state grant.
•reappointed John Stell as city
attorney for a one-year term and
Billy Chandler as the judge of the
recorder’s court for a two-year
term.
• accepted the recommendation
of the planning commission and
rezoned a lot owned by Dink
Wood on Maysville Road from
M-l (manufacturing) in Jackson
County to C-l (commercial) in the
city and annexed it.
•turned down the recommen
dation of the planning commis
sion and accepted a request for
a variance from Ingles Markets
to install an additional sign near
the Hwy. 334 entrance of its new
store. Ingles had asked for a 148-
square-foot sign, but by the time it
came before the city council had
reduced the size of the sign to 24
square feet — which is the size
permitted under the city’s sign
ordinance.
•approved a “garbage fee ordi
nance’’ which increases the cost
of residential garbage service 50
cents a month. Another 50-cent
increase is planned for next July.
• declared a 50 by 200 lot stretch
ing from Maysville Road to Hood
Street as surplus property for the
purpose of advertising it for sale.
The city will retain a 10-foot utility
easement on the lot.
• approved the annual payment
of $1,500 to the Jackson County
Senior Center to pay the cost of
transporting Commerce seniors
to and from the center.
•approved an amendment to
the Gas Department budget to
add $5,000 to its tankless water
heater program. The city offers
$500 rebates for the energy-ef
ficient system, and has sold 18
units so far, depleting its fund for
rebates.

Superintendents’ School
Scholarship.
In other business, the board:
• approved the school calendar
for 2008-2009. The schedule calls
for students to return Aug. 7.
•learned from superintendent
James E. “Mac’’ McCoy that, as
of October 2007, the system had
collected $922,000 in SPLOST for
the school year. The school system
will learn how much it received in
November and December in the
next two months.
•heard that Dr. Pam Summey
received a pair of honors at
the annual fall conference of
the Georgia Council for the
Administrators of Special
Education. She was recognized for
Commerce Schools increasing its
percentage of special education
graduates with regular education
diplomas and for the school sys
tem meeting multiple state targets
for special education.
• learned that Commerce Middle
School received recognition on
the Environmental Education of
Georgia web site.
•approved several personnel
items following a closed ses
sion.
