The public is invited to meet
North Georgia novelist Julie
Cannon, author of “Truelove
& Homegrown Tomatoes” and
two sequels, who will visit the
Commerce Public Library this
Friday afternoon at 1:30 to read
from her newest novel, “The
Romance Readers’ Book Club.”
Cannon, who has visited the
library upon the publication of
each of her earlier novels, is a
member of the Dixie Darlin’s, a
group of Georgia’s “book-writin’
belles” who appear together
sometimes and serve up advice
and anecdotes, Southern-style.
Appreciated locally for her
wry wit and humor, Cannon has
written a young girl’s coming-
of-age story this time. It follows
the discoveries of Tammi Lynn
Elco, who is given a sack full of
romance novels at a crucial time
in her life and forms a secret
book club, to the consternation
of local ministers, not to mention
her very strict grandmother.
Michael Lee West, author of
“Consuming Passions” and the
just-published “Mermaids in the
Basement,” calls this newest book
Cannon’s finest to date, and says,
“Readers of any age, and from
any region, will savor this tender,
insightful portrait of grandpar
ents and grandchildren and how
books not only have the power to
entertain but to set us free.”
Copies of “The Romance
Readers’ Book Club” are avail-

New Display
Commerce woodcarver Royce
Brown took up carving 15 years
ago, when he was sidelined by a
leg injury and needed something
to occupy his time. The rest, as
they say, is history.
Brown has brought throngs of
people to life since then, coaxing
them out of wood with his skill
as a carver. Among his many
creations are a baseball team, a
group of golfers, and countless
beautiful or humorous individual
figures of all ages, for each of
Woodcarver Royce Brown
whom he has a whole life story.
The group on display at the
library is a church choir, which
Brown imagines as singing “like
the Erastus Christian Church
choir.” He invites those who see
his display to see whether they
can figure out which figure is the
choir director. Gazing with amuse
ment at the group as a whole, he
muses, “I don’t know why that
church had so many twins,” then
adds, “Some do, you know.”
