— Close To A Win Vs Towns
Cont. from Page IB
with 15 points. Jessie Flint
added eight, Felicia Grier six,
Lauren Jones, Morgan Mather
and Kaylin Canup four apiece,
Terra Hancock three and Jas
mine Sanders and Brittany
Beauchamp two each.
McCurley pointed out that
Commerce out-rebounded
Towns County — but he also ob
served that the Tigers committed
more turnovers than the Indians.
“They used a press and mixed
their defenses, but we handled
that very well,’' he said. “It
seemed like our turnovers were
not forced, just silly things.’’
Dragons 53-Tigers 39
The Lady Dragons continued
their years-long dominance over
the Lady Tigers last Friday, but
the game wasn’t as one-sided as
the score might suggest.
The Tigers suffered a 14-0 run
by the Dragons to open the
game, but cut the lead all the
way back to two on a Sewell
jumper at the end of the first
half. Then, Jefferson came back
on the floor and put together a
13-0 run to open the second
half.
“It’s hard to spot a team 27
points and then expect to come
back and win,’’ McCurley not
ed.
The coach admired his team’s
grit.
“I couldn’t ask more from
the girls as far as the way they
fight,’’ he said. “They fight and
they’ll fight to the end. That’s
what I really like. It wasn’t like
we did anything that bad in
the first and third quarters; the
shots just didn’t go in.’’
McCurley said it was “a big
ball game with a lot of emo
tion.’’ “It was a fun ballgame to
play,’’ he added.
Sewell’s 19 was high for
Commerce. Hancock added
six, Flint four, Sanders three,
Mather and Grier two apiece
and Beauchamp scored one.
Leopards 61-Tigers 50
Commerce led 9-6 after one
quarter, but went down 29-19
at the half and were down 43-29
after three periods en route to a
61-50 loss.
“We had a great comeback in
the fourth quarter. We cut the
lead to six, but it was just a little
too late,’’ McCurley said.
Sewell scored 16, Hancock
added 11, Grier and Flint six
apiece and Sanders and Mather
three each.
