Ash Wednesday,
Easter come early
Easter Day arrives early in 2008,
the date being Sunday March 23.
Ash Wednesday on Feb. 6, marks
the beginning of Lent, a season
of spiritual preparation lasting 40
days leading up to Easter, the day
Christians believe Jesus Christ
arose from the dead.
The resurrection of Christ is fun
damental to the Christian faith.
Brotherhood Group
To Meet Feb. 3
The Community Brotherhood
will meet on Sunday, Feb. 3, at
7:30 a.m„ for a monthly break
fast program always held in the
fellowship hall of Homer United
Methodist Church.
A local Baptist minister, the
Rev. Roy Rogers, is president
of the group made up mostly
of laymen from Banks County
churches.
The Rev. Jim McLendon, pas
tor at Homer UMC, serves as
program chairman. The church
is located one block east of
Veterans Memorial Park in down
town Homer.
The organization extends an
invitation to all men in the area
who may be interested. Preparing
the meal in February will be
those members who signed up at
last month’s meeting.
Benefit Singing
Planned Feb. 2
A benefit singing will be held
Saturday, February 2, at 6 p.m.
at the Jaemore Barn, located at
Jaemore Farm Market on Hwy.
365 in Alto.
Featured singers will be The
Lord’s Messengers, The Goss
Brothers and The New Bryants.
A love offering will be received
during the singing. A meal will
be served to any one making a
donation.
All proceeds will go to the food
ministry of Enon Baptist Church,
Alto.

Walking Group
To Meet At Cedar
Grove Tues., Thurs.
Cedar Grove Methodist
Church, Jefferson, will hold a
walking exercise class Tuesday
and Thursday nights from 7 to
8 p.m. in the church fellowship
hall.
The first 15 minutes of each
meeting will be devoted to good
eating habits including heart
healthy recipes.
The cost of the class is $20 per
month to cover the cost of utility
bills. All proceeds will benefit
the church.

Announced For St.
Catherine Laboure
St. Catherine Laboure Catholic
Mission will be open on Friday,
February 1, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
for Adoration of the Blessed
Sacrament.
Parishioners of St. Catherine’s
are asked to bring their old palms
to Church by Sunday, February 3.
The palms will be burned after the
11 a.m. Mass and be distributed at
both services on Ash Wednesday.
There will also be a short organi
zational meeting for Relay for Life
after the 11 a.m. Mass on February
3. Plans for St. Catherine’s par
ticipation in this year’s relay will be
discussed
The services on Ash Wednesday,
February 6, include Mass at 12:10
p.m. and a Communion Service
at 7 p.m.

Homer UMC
Establishes Fund
Homer United Methodist
Church has established a special
fund to assist a young college
student, Brittany Hellmeister,
who has been diagnosed with
anorexia nervosa, a serious eat
ing disorder which affects a num
ber of teenage girls.
Hellmeister has entered an
intensive outpatient treatment
facility in Gwinnett County.
While 92 percent of insurance
companies in the United State
recognize anorexia nervosa as a
serious emotional disease, none
cover expenses for eating disor
ders.
Donations to assist Hellmeister
should be made out to: Homed
United Methodist Church, desig
nate “Brittany Fund,’’ and mailed
to P.O. Box 37, Homer, Ga. 30547.
Gifts of any size are greatly
needed and deeply appreciated,
according to church organizers.
Center Baptist To
Hold Chicken Mull
Center Baptist Church, locat
ed on Old Hwy. 441 South of
Nicholson, will hold a Chicken
Mull on Saturday, February 2, from
4:30 to 7 p.m.
The event will benefit the church
choir.
The meal will be $6 per person
for all-you-can-eat mull and dessert
or $6 per quart for take-out.
Everyone is welcome.

To Meet Saturday
The Tri-County Ministerial
Association will hold its monthly
meeting Saturday, February 2, at
8:00 a.m. in the conference room at
BJC Medical Center.
The business session will follow
breakfast.

missionaries in Banks, Jackson and
Madison counties are invited.
Black History Event
Planned Feb. 17
Mt. Pleasant CME Church,
Commerce, will hold its annual
Black History program on Sunday,
February 17, at 3 p.m.
The Rev. Eddie Thornton, pastor
of Flat Rock CME Church, will be
the guest speaker.
A dinner will be served in the fel
lowship hall following the service.

Being Accepted
Angel Food Ministries is cur
rently accepting orders for its
February food boxes. Orders
may be placed for the February
menu at Lebanon United
Methodist Church, Jefferson,
Antioch United Methodist
Church, Nicholson, and Faith
Baptist Church, Jefferson.
Orders will be taken until
Monday, February 4. Boxes
will be distributed Saturday,
February 16.
Organizers said the Angel
Food program is not limited to
those who are experiencing a
difficult financial time, but for
anyone wishing to save money
on their grocery bill. The cost of
food box is $30.
The February menu includes:
four, five-ounce sirloin strip
steaks; two pounds Salisbury
steak dinner entree; two
pounds split chicken breasts;
two pounds breaded chicken
breast fillets; one and a half
pounds meaty beef ribs; four
six-ounce pork chops; 12 ounc
es Philly steak portions; 12
ounces peanut butter; 4 ounces
chicken noodle soup (makes 64
ounces); nine ounces frosted
corn flakes; 16 ounces frozen
fresh corn; 16 ounces frozen
fresh carrots; two pounds fresh
onions; two pounds fresh pota
toes; 15 ounces sliced pears;
one pound black-eyed peas;
and one dessert item.
The first February special —
available for an additional $20
— includes two, 12-ounce bone-
in ribeye steaks; two, 12-ounce
bone-in New York strip steaks;
four, eight ounce lean hamburg
er steaks; and one and a half
pounds mild Italian sausage.
The second February special
— available for an additional $19
— includes six, 10 ounce prime
rib steaks.
The third February special -
available for an additional $18
— includes two pounds bread
ed frying chicken; two pounds
chicken tenders; two pounds
chicken wings; two pounds
grilled individually quick frozen
chicken breasts; and two pounds
chicken breast chunks.
Specials are available to any
one who purchases a regular
menu food box.
Food orders may be picked up
on Saturday, Feb. 16, and partici
pants must bring a large box to
receive their food.
Orders may be paid by check,
cash or food stamps. Organizers
ask that orders be placed as
soon as possible.
