THE COMMERCE (GA) NEWS, WEDNESDAY. TANUARY 30, 2008 - PAGE 3A — Election Is Tuesday Cont. from Paage 1A While the issue has generated a lot of discussion, its practical impact will likely be minimal in the short-term. Most restaurants that would sell alcohol by the drink in Jackson County are located within a municipality and won’t be affected by the vote. Many of those already have some Sunday alcohol pouring based on city regulations. The biggest impact in the near future will be to allow two coun ty golf courses to offer alcohol ic beverages to Sunday duffers. Only two unincorporated facili ties currently have a county pour ing licenses and both of those are golf courses. Traditions Golf Course at Traditions of Braselton and Eagle Greens Golf Course near Commerce have the only two county-issued pouring licenses. The measure is for by-the-drink sales only and would not allow Sunday package sales from con venience or grocery stores. Presidential Primaries At stake in the presidential pri maries are 87 delegates for the Democratic contenders and 72 for the Republicans. Each party will convene this summer to select their nominees for the presidency based largely on the results of pri mary elections and presidential caucuses. Following a big win in South Carolina, the latest polls have Illinois Senator Barak Obama leading New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton by a margin of 41 percent to 35 in what has become largely a two-candidate race for the Democratic nomination. But Democratic voters can also mark their ballots for for mer South Carolina senator and vice presidential candidate John Edwards, Delaware Senator Joe Biden, Connecticut Senator Chris Dodd, former Alaska Senator Mike Gravel, Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich and New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson. All but Edwards have dropped out of the race. On the Republican side, Arizona Senator John McCain is the hot property following his South Carolina win, but Feb. 5 could revitalize the hopes of former New York Mayor Rudi Guiliani, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and for mer Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee. Also on the GOP ballot are California Representative Duncan Hunter, frequent presi dential candidate Alan Keyes, Texas Congressman Ron Paul, Colorado Congressman Tom Tancredo and former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson. Hunter, Tancredo and Thompson have dropped out since the ballot was approved. Georgia is but a part of the bigger “Super Tuesday" picture, with more than 22 states hold ing presidential primaries or cau cuses. By the end of the day, the picture could be much clearer as to who’ll be on the ballot Tuesday, Nov. 4. To cast ballots Tuesday, voters must be able to provide proper photo identification, such as a valid driver’s license, or a federal, state or military ID. Some Changes In Store For Voters On Tuesday Jackson County Probate Judge Margaret Deadwyler, who also serves as election superinten dent, has announced that several precinct changes are planned. The changes include the follow ing: •Center precinct: Will move from Center Fire Department to Center Baptist Church, located at 9368 Commerce Road (across from the fire department). •Wilson precinct: Will move from the Maysville Fire Depart ment to the Maysville Public Li- brary, located at 9247 Gillsville Hwy., Maysville. • Hoschton precinct: Will move from Hoschton City Hall to the Hoschton Depot, located at 4272 Hwy. 53. •Porter precinct: Will move from the civic center building to the police and municipal building, located at 5040 Hwy. 53, Brasel ton. •Randolph precinct: Will move from West Jackson Middle School to Center United Methodist Church, located at 7649 Jackson Trail Road. “In order to keep up with the expanding population and for the convenience of voters, it has be come necessary to move the vot ing precincts," Deadwyler said. “We suggest you drive by these locations prior to election day to familiarize yourself with the new locations." Commerce voters will again uti lize two precincts, Minish North at the J. Nolan Spear Public Safe ty Complex on South Elm Street; and Minish South, at the Com merce Recreation Department of fice on Carson Street. For more information on the changes, call the probate office at 706-387-6276. NEED PRINTING? CALL 706-367-5233 / \ CITY OF COMMERCE NOTICE FROM WATER/SEWER DEPARTMENT JANUARY 2008 The City of Commerce will be conducting a smoke test of the sanitary sewer lines in the area bounded by S. Elm Street, Piedmont/Sam Brown Blvd., Stark Street and Poplar Street. The testing will take place at several locations from January 28, 2008 until February 8, 2008. The purpose of this testing is to determine locations where ground water and surface water may be entering the sewer system during rain events. Please make sure you run enough water in your sinks, tubs, and floor drains to fill the P trap. This is especially important at locations that are not used very often. Be advised that you will see smoke coming from the sewer vents of your buildings. This is a part of the test and is normal. If smoke appears inside a building this indicates a problem with your plumbing. You should contact a plumber to check this problem and correct it. THE SMOKE ITSELF IS NOT HARMFUL If you have any questions, please call the Water/Sewer Department at 706-335-4200 or City Hall at 706-335-3164.
