Student Collecting Donations For
Iraqi Children At Commerce First UMC
Ashley Gregory one of

at Commerce First United
Methodist Church, has been
selected for the People to
People Student Ambassador
Program.
Gregory is working on a ser
vice project that is part of
her ambassador duties. Her
service project involves col
lecting school supplies and
putting together at least 100
school kits for Operation Iraqi
Children.
Gregory has been doing extra household chores, baby sitting,
and other activities to earn money to help with purchasing the
needed supplies.
Supplies needed for the student kits are: blunt tip scissors,
12-inch rulers with metric units, 12 packs of #2 pencils, small
pencil sharpeners, large erasers, colored pencils, composition
notebooks, folders with pockets and pencil cases.
Gregory is requesting donations from the local community of
school supplies and/or monetary contributions to assist with
shipping the school supplies.
Donations may be dropped off at Commerce First United
Methodist Church, located at 54 Cherry Street, Commerce.

Celebrate Black
History Month
Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist
Church, Commerce, will have
a Black History program on
Sunday, Feb. 10, at 11 a.m. in
recognition of Black History
Month.
The Rev. Patrick Burgess, min
ister of music from Neals Grove
Baptist Church, Commerce, will
be the guest speaker.

New Deacon
Named For St.
Catherine Laboure
Dale Lister will be ordained by
Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory
as deacon on Friday, Feb. 8, at 7
p.m., at the Cathedral of Christ
the King, Atlanta.
Lister will serve as deacon for
St. Catherine Laboure Catholic
Mission in Commerce and St.
Mary’s Catholic Church in
Toccoa.
There will be a reception
to honor the new deacon on
Saturday, Feb. 9, at 1 p.m., at
the Commerce Civic Center.
All parishioners and friends are
invited, however, since the event
is catered, organizers are asking
for reservations by calling the
church at 706-335-2622.
St. Catherine Laboure is located
at 708 State Street, Commerce.

Blacks Creek To
Mark 205 Years
Blacks Creek Baptist Church,
Commerce, will be celebrat
ing the 205 th anniversary of the
founding of the church on Feb.
10.
Sunday School will begin at
9:45 a.m. and the worship service
will begin at 10:30 a.m. with a spe
cial inspirational music program
by Phil Brown and the Browns
from Commerce.

is just off Hwy. 98 and the 441 by

'Sock-lt-To-Us'
Event Planned
Circle II of Commerce First
United Methodist Church is
having its annual “Sock-it-to-us”
campaign all during the month
of February. The Circle collects
socks for children in grades
Pre-K through fourth. The socks
are for needy children as well
as those who have accidents at
school (what child can resist
jumping in a puddle). Socks or
monetary contributions for the
sock fund can be dropped off at
the church office located at 54
Cherry Street, Commerce.

Pancake Supper
Set For Tuesday
Homer United Methodist Men
will sponsor its seventh annual
pancake supper Tuesday, Feb. 12,
from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Dine-in or carry-out for $6 per
plate. Enjoy pancakes (all you
can eat), coffee, bacon and coun
try sausage. Proceeds will ben
efit UMM projects, locally and
beyond.
Blair Tolbert Named Ministry Intern
Blair Tolbert, Nicholson,
has been named a ministry
intern at West End Methodist
Church in Nashville, Tenn.
Tolbert is with the Turner
Leadership Scholars pro
gram at Vanderbilt Divinity
School.
The Turner Leadership
Scholars program grants fel
lowships to the top United
Methodist candidates nation
wide seeking the master of
divinity degree and who
demonstrate a clear intent
to pursue ordained congre
gational ministry.
Tolbert was one of six
inaugural Turner Leadership
Scholars at the Vanderbilt
Divinity School this year.
Tolbert has a Wesleyan focus in her studies, while earning a
bachelor of arts in religion with a concentration in church leader
ship from LaGrange College. She then spent the year following
graduation as the full-time campus ministry intern at the Wesley
Foundation at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill,
N.C.
Tolbert will be working in areas of church leadership and help
ing with young adult ministries at West End Methodist Church.
Tolbert is the daughter of Jerry and Vickie Tolbert of the Center
community.
