Marie Barnwell and Jessica Crow’s kinder garten class at Commerce Primary School has been learning about Abraham Lincoln. They read books on Lincoln, wrote stories about Lincoln, counted pennies, made a log cabin, and many other activities. They also had a party to celebrate his birthday Feb. 12. Learn About Honest Abe Becky Shirley Shows Grand Champion At EMC Beef Show Representing Future Farmers of America chapters (FFA) and 4-H clubs from six Northeast Georgia counties, 79 young people gathered to compete for awards, ribbons and cash prizes at Jackson Electric Membership Corporation’s 39th annual Quality Beef Show Saturday, Feb. 9. Together, they entered 131 animals in the competition held at the Jackson County Comprehensive High School livestock center. A steer shown by Becky Shirley of East Jackson FFA won grand champion steer honors, and another shown by Christa Royster of the Jackson County 4-H won reserve cham pion steer. In showmanship, Cindy Cooper of the Jackson County 4-H won the Novice catego ry; and Steven Cooper of the Jackson County FFA won Junior category. In the heifer competition, Royster showed the Angus breed champion, and Cain Thurmond of the Jefferson FFA showed the Angus breed reserve champion. Anthony Woods of the Jackson County FFA won Chi influence breed reserve champion. Cody Smith of the Jefferson FFA showed the Hereford breed reserve champion. Taylor Schieszer of the East Jackson County FFA won Shorthorn breed champion. Brianna Bryant of the Jackson County FFA showed the Simmental breed champion, and Macy Seagraves of the Jackson County 4-H took honors for the Simmental breed reserve cham pion. In the Commercial field, Landis Seagraves of the Jackson County 4-H showed the cham pion commercial heifer. Young people competing in the Quality Beef Show use the expe rience and judge’s feedback to help prepare for the upcoming statewide competition in Perry. “There is no entry fee for this competition. The kids have the opportunity to win prizes and get pointers from the judge to help them improve their animals and skills, so everyone comes out a winner,’’ said Randall Pugh, Jackson EMC president/CEO. Work Together On Math Students in Windy McCannon’s kindergarten class at Commerce Primary School have been learning about presidents. One of the activities was for the students to put together a book let that listed facts about the 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. Some of the students shared their booklets with the school nurse and other faculty members. Shown in the picture are students Bryce Owensby, Eve Fisher and TJ Trudnak showing their booklets to the school nurse, Ashley Hulsey. East Jackson Elementary School and East Jackson Comprehensive High School stu dents work together on math problems. Students from an EJCHS class came over to work with students as part of their own curriculum. The close proximity of the two schools has lead to many cooperative learn ing experiences for students at both schools.
