THE COMMERCE (GA) NEWS, WEDNESDAY. MARCH 5, 2008 - PAGE 3A
—Army Wants To Be Downtown
Cont. from Page 1A
Member Clark Hill suggested
that the DDA should encourage
the Commerce Area Business
Association to hold a sidewalk
sale once all of the new busi
nesses are in place.
'There’s going to be a whole
lot of new stuff downtown,” he
said, adding that downtown res
taurants should be involved in
the event.
Meanwhile, the DDA continues
to seek ideas — and possibly new
businesses — from other Georgia
towns.
Members Chris Bray and
Claudine Smith, who also
serve on the DDA’s Economic
Development Committee, report
ed on visits to a number of towns,
including (but not limited to)
Wrightsville, Sandersville, Metter,
Dublin, Milledgeville, Madison,
Covington, Barnesville, Griffin
and Elberton.
“We left business packets and
put some ideas in their heads,”
Smith said.
Craver reported that a represen
tative of the company that wrote
the DDA’s design guidelines will
make a presentation, including
suggestions for revisions and
updates in the 27-year-old guide
lines. The city expects to spend
up to $5,000 on the update.
Spencer Park Events
Craver also announced a sched
ule of “Friday after 5” events
planned for the spring. They
include “movies in the park”
Friday April 25, and Friday, June
6, and concerts — also in Spencer
Park — Fridays, May 9 and May
30. “The Bee Movie” is planned
for April 25, and Craver is still
working on the June 6 title. He
is also researching bands for the
two concerts.
Part of the funding for those
activities is courtesy of the Cold
Sassy Players, who have turned
over a small grant they received
for a March performance that has
been cancelled.
Easter Events
Tricia Massey of the DDA’s
Promotions Committee reported
that the children’s Easter egg
hunt and parade are on sched
ule. Both will be held Saturday,
March 22. The parade will begin
at the Community Bank & Trust
drive-through location on North
Elm Street and will go to the First
Baptist Church of Commerce on
South Elm, where the egg hunt
will be held. The event is in con
junction with Community Bank
and Trust and the Commerce
Area Business Association.
