Cancer Society Offers
Information Luncheon'
The American Cancer Society
of Jackson County will hold an
information luncheon, “Because
We Care," for local business
leaders from noon to 1:30 p.m.
Tuesday April 1, at Community
Bank and Trust, 71 Memorial
Drive, Jefferson.
The program will provide a
variety of workplace solutions
that address employee wellness,
volunteerism, community lead
ership and philanthropy, while
advancing the ACS’s mission of
eliminating cancer.
Lunch will be provided, and
those who plan to attend are
asked to RSVP to Ashley Mor
row at 706-549-4893 or amor-
row@cancer.org.

Love To Wed On April 12
Amy and Phil Brown of Com
merce announce the engagement
and forthcoming marriage of
their daughter, Holly Elizabeth
Brown, to John Christopher
Love, son of the late Pamela Sue
Love, formerly of Commerce.
They will be united in marriage
at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12,
at Homer Baptist Church. All
friends and family are invited to
attend.
Miss Brown is the granddaugh
ter of Malise Brown, Commerce,
and the late Hyman Brown; and
the late Mr. and Mrs. Guy Daves,
formerly of Commerce.
She is a 2005 graduate of Banks
County High School, works full
time at Hyman Brown Insurance
Agency in Commerce, and is en
rolled in online classes in pursuit
of a business degree.
Mr. Love is the grandson of Mr.
and Mrs. Henry Cheatham of
Commerce.
He is a 2004 graduate of Banks
County High School and is em
ployed by Southeastern Toyota
Distributors.
Swilling W. Scott Jr. was re
cently awarded the master’s of
health science degree in emer
gency and disaster management
from Touro International Uni
versity, graduating summa cum
laude.
The degree prepares individu
als to provide leadership in ma
jor emergencies and disasters,
including terrorism.
Scott is a lieutenant colonel in
the U.S. Army and is stationed
in Norfolk, VA. He received his
undergraduate degree in crimi
nal justice from Fort Valley
State University and is the son
of Lucille Scott-King of Com
merce and the late Swilling W.

Desert To Raise Funds For Program
Deadline For Mended Hearts
Scholarship Coming April 15
BJC Mended Hearts Chapter 171 offers two $500 scholarships to
local students.
Applicants must write a letter stating their intent — including goals
and plans — for contributing to some area of medicine.
The Scholarship Committee will review the completed letters and
may interview the applicants before the final recipients are select
ed.
The deadline for letters of application is April 15, and an appli
cant may submit more than one application. The scholarship will be
awarded in May.

Mended Hearts is a support group for heart patients and their
families. It meets at 7:00 p.m. on the third Monday of each month in
the conference room of BJC Medical Center.
Distance runner John Lindsay of
Jefferson will run 150 miles across
the Gobi Desert in Kashi, China,
beginning June 8 to raise funds for
the Lindsay’s Legacy Mentoring
Program.
He is accepting donations per
mile, with proceeds to benefit the
local mentoring program named
in honor of his father, the first
mentor coordinator, the late Rev.
Jack P. Lindsay.
The Gobi March (www.4deserts.
com/gobimarch) follows the an
cient Silk Road and takes approxi
mately 5 1/2 days to complete, as
participants run 25 to 30 miles a
day through some of the most ex
treme desert conditions on earth.
Lindsay’s Legacy is an in-school
community-wide mentoring pro
gram that pairs trained communi
ty volunteers with area school chil
dren identified by school officials
as needing crucial mentoring sup
port. The program has 127 trained
mentors working in the three local
school systems with 157 students
being served. Mentors are role
models, confidants, advocates,
counselors, friends and tutors. The
program is administered through
Family Connection, and is named
after the Rev. Lindsay.
“I assure you that all funds will
go directly to support the training
of the mentors and costs directly
associated with the administration
and perpetuation of the program,"
John Lindsay said.

Ann Cross of Auburn, to Jay Hai
ley Tolbert, son of Ed and Delia
Tolbert of Nicholson.
The wedding is planned for
noon Saturday, April 19, 2008, at
Salem No. 2 Missionary Baptist
Church, Mineral Bluff. All family
and friends are invited.
The bride is the granddaughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Clore,
Gainesville, and Mr. and Mrs.
Wendall Cross, Mineral Bluff.
Miss Cross is a 1998 graduate of
Fannin County High School and
a 2003 graduate of the Univer
sity of Georgia, from which she
received a bachelor of science
degree in agricultural engineering.
She is employed by Engineering
Management Inc., Lawrenceville,
where she designs municipal
drinking water and wastewater
systems.
The groom is the grandson of
the late Mr. and Mrs. Alexander
Bealor Brown, formerly of Com
merce; and the late Mr. and Mrs.
Joe Ed Tolbert, formerly of Nich
olson.
Mr. Tolbert is a 1994 graduate of
Jackson County Comprehensive
High School and works in con
struction and grading with Harris
and Son Construction, Jefferson.
