CHS To Add Fair Of
AP Courses Next Fall
Two new Advanced Placement
courses will be available to
Commerce High School students
next fall: AP U.S. History and AP
Studio Art.
In just two academic years,
CHS has more than doubled its
AP course offerings from three
to seven courses through the sup
port of state grants and the local
board of education.
Increasing the AP offerings has
been a priority for Superintendent
James E. “Mac” McCoy who is in
his third year in Commerce.
“When I interviewed with the
board, they spoke of the need for
more AP courses,” said McCoy.
“We worked with Dr. (Joy)
Tolbert (assistant superintendent
for instruction) and Mr. Drew
(Donnie Drew, CHS principal)
and we made things happen.”
When McCoy arrived, the only
AP courses were in language arts.
When school opens in the fall,
every part of the core curriculum
will have an AP course — after
which the offering of a second
foreign language becomes a prior
ity, according to McCoy.
“Well need to look at some
things after that and see how
we’re doing,” the superintendent
said. “We will probably need
some more growth before we can
add more AP courses.”
The addition of AP courses and
a second foreign language means
CHS is “beginning to offer what
our kids need to go to research
institutions,” McCoy says.
Each of the past two years,
Tolbert has written a grant for the
Department of Education for the
AP courses, McCoy said, and the
school board has supported the
effort.
“A lot of times, in a very small
school like we have, it tends to
make it difficult to bring in AP
classes because we have fewer
students,” McCoy pointed out.
“We just want to do everything
we can to strengthen every child’s
curriculum,” he continued. “Once
the new school opens and we can
offer drama and other fine arts
programs, I think well be well on
our way.”
CHS received a competi
tive grant from the Georgia
Department of Education to
expand its AP course offerings.
Local school districts can apply
for the competitive AP grant
from the state, which provides
financial support for teachers to
receive training during the sum
mer to teach AP courses during
the 2008-09 school year.
AP courses are college-level
courses offered by trained high
school teachers in the regular
high school setting. AP courses
guarantee rigor in the classrooms.
Successful scores on AP exams
can result in credit for course
work in colleges and universities.
In addition to AP U.S. History
and AP Studio Art, CHS offers
AP Literature/Composition, AP
Language/Composition, AP
Calculus, AP Biology and AP
Environmental Science.
Enrollment ranges from six stu
dents in AP Calculus to 21 in
AP language arts courses and
AP biology, according to Elaine
Roller, counselor.

DID YOU KNOW?
By Preacher Clint
DID YOU KNOW THAT JESUS
ROSE FROM THE GRAVE ON
THE THIRD DAY JUST AS HE
SAID HE WOULD? On. 2:19)
The resurrection is the greatest
fact in all of history, many religions
claim to have a savior but only JESUS
ever came back from the dead and is
alive for ever more. (Rev. 1:18) This
same JESUS that was crucified, has
ascended back into Heaven and is
soon coming again. (Acts 1:11)
neither is there salvation in any
other. (Acts 4:12) When He comes
the second time, He’ll come not as a
Lamb to be slain but as a Lion to rule
and reign over His creation. He is
“THE LORD JESUS CHRIST.” Whom
GOD has highly exalted and one day
every knee shall bow and every
tongue shall confess that He is
LORD. (Phil. 2:10&11)
