Library's Canned Food Drive Continues
The Commerce Public Library
is collecting canned goods to give
to the Banks-Jackson Emergency
Food Bank — and it is forgiving
overdue-book fines in exchange,
from now until the end of April.
“We learned that our Food Bank
was really struggling and nearly
out of food," explains Library
Board member Anne Rogers,
“and we knew we had to do some
thing’’
Fines for overdue materials will
be forgiven at the rate of one can
per $1 of fines, “which can save
you at least half of your library
fines,’’ says library director Susan
Harper. She adds that donations
of canned goods are welcome
and urgently needed, “whether or
not you have fines.’’ All donations
of canned goods may be placed
in the barrel at the library’s front
desk.
Reading Club For Adults
Every summer, the children’s li
brarian, gets asked the same ques
tion: Why are all the reading clubs
for children? Why not have one
for adults?
So now children’s librarian Cath
erine Harris is doing just that. She
has assembled a group of prizes
from generous local merchants,
and every time you grown-ups
check out a library book and read
it, you can enter to win one.
Prizes include “Huck’s Bucks’’
that will buy you a meal at Huck’s,
a hanging flower basket from
Shirley’s Feed & Seed, a free oil
change from City Tire, and a gift
basket from the Joy Shoppe.
The drawing will be May 17.
Perfectly Polished
At The Library
Debra Lassiter, the Emily Post
of Athens, will bring her Perfectly
Polished Etiquette School to the
Commerce library and offer two
free classes (Tuesday, April 29,
and Thursday, May 8, both at 3:30
p.m.) for fifth- and sixth-graders
who want to spiff up their social

and they are well-coached.
Varsity pitcher, Clint Ogle, was
a recent "Northeast Georgia

recent 3-0 win over a Region foe.
In all our athletic teams, both
