Morgen Alexes Byrd
Joe and Holly Byrd of Commerce
announce the birth of a daugh
ter, Morgen Alexes Byrd, Friday,
April 18, 2008, at Athens Regional
Medical Center. She weighed six
pounds and was 19 1/2 inches
long.
The grandparents are Donna
Slater, Commerce; Kurt Hewell,
Clarkesville; George and Lynda
Byrd, Ohio; and Paula Kelly,
Maysville.
Great-grandparents are Virginia
Garrett and Buddy Case, Elberton;
Henry and Pat Hewell, Commerce;
Bob and Molly Splawn, Gainesville;
and the late John Garrett, formerly
of Commerce.

attended the historical society’s program there.

Public Library's T-Shirt Design Contest
Historical Society
Meets At Cemetery
In Nicholson
The Jackson County Historical
Society met April 20 at the
Murray-Stapler Cemetery in
Nicholson, with some 55 people
enjoying a program presented by
Randy Fleeman, Kathy Wallace
Wilson, Barbara Beshiri, Beverly
Dailey Wells and James Pittman
Harris.
Land records, CSA records
and old family photos were on
display. After the program, many
members and guests asked ques
tions and rambled through the
site.
The next JCHS meeting will
be at 6 p.m. July 17 at the Talmo
City Hall for the group’s annual
picnic.
The program will be presented
at the Talmo Depot and will be
on the importance of trains in
the history of Jackson County.
AA Chapter Meets
5 Times Weekly
The Breezy Knob chapter of
Alcoholics Anonymous meets
five times a week at 69 Central
Avenue (across from First
Commerce Bank) in Commerce.
Meeting times are at 8 p.m.
on Tuesdays, Wednesdays,
Thursdays and Saturdays and at
6:45 p.m. Sundays.
Meetings consist of open dis
cussion.
The Maysville Public Library
seeks artwork from local artists
ages 5 to 16 for a library T-shirt
design contest.
The contest ends May 8. The
winner will be chosen by Friends
of the Library and will receive
a free T-shirt and a gift card.
Submit designs to Stacy or Betty
at the library.
No profanity or advertising of
drugs, alcohol or tobacco will be
accepted in designs.
Submissions should include the
artist’s name, telephone number
or address and a parent’s name
on the back.
Gwen Crane and Bradlee Glover
of Commerce announce the birth
of a son, William Bradlee Glover,
Sunday, April 27, 2008, at BJC
Medical Center, Commerce. He
weighed six pounds, three ounces
and was 18 inches long. He joins a
brother, Carson Young, 7.
The grandparents are Bill and
Vickie Young, Commerce.
Zayne Stewart Rhodes
Phillip and Nikki Rhodes of
Commerce announce the birth
of a son, Zayne Stewart Rhodes,
Monday, Dec. 31, 2007, at St.
Mary’s Hospital, Athens.
He joins a brother, Eli Rhodes, 6.
The grandparents are Hiram
and Kay Rutherford, Quitman;
and Howard and Linda Rhodes,
Nicholson. The great-grandparents
are Richard and Margaret Danzey,
Commerce; and Georgia and Bill
Gunter and Vivian Cato, all of
Graniteville, SC.
Bunko Tourney
A bunko tournament to support
the American Cancer Society’s
Relay for Life in Jackson County
will be held at 1 pm. Saturday, May
24, at the Porterhouse in the Dry
Pond community.
Bunko is a parlor game played
with dice.
A practice bunko day was held at
1 pm. Monday, April 21.
Men and women are needed for
the tournament and the $10 fee
will go to the ACS.

Relay For Life
Announces Fund-Raisers
A number of fund-raisers and
events have been scheduled to
benefit the American Cancer
Society’s Relay for Life in Jackson
County. They are:
• Saturday, May 3: Jefferson First
Baptist Church Relay Day, with a
yard sale beginning at 8 a.m. in the
church parking lot. A Family Fun
Night will be held at the Jefferson
High School cafeteria from 6 to
10 p.m. The cost is $25 per family,
and will include a sock hop, silent
auction and concessions.
•Tuesday, May 6: The Jackson
EMC Relay for Life Team will host
a barbecue lunch from 11 a.m. to
1:30 p.m. at the JEMC tech ser
vices building in Jefferson. Plates
will be $7 each, including barbe
cue, slaw, bread and dessert. See

•Wednesday, May 14: A golf
tournament will be sponsored by
Wayne Neal Chevrolet at Double
Oaks Golf Club. Lunch and regis
tration start at noon, with tee time
at 1 p.m. for four-man best ball.
The cost is $200 per team or $50
per person (ladies welcome). All
four-man teams signed up will play
as a team. Sponsorships are avail

• Friday, May 16: A John Berry
concert at 7 p.m. at East Jackson
Comprehensive High School to
benefit the relay for life. Tickets
are $20 in advance and $25 at
the door. Tickets are available at

Wayne Neal Chevrolet Team at

•Now through May 30: Tickets
are available from the Jefferson
First United Methodist Church
Team for the giveaway of a fully
constructed child’s play fort. The
winner will be announced May
30 at the relay. A donation of $5
is accepted per ticket, with five

are available for the giveaway of
a flat panel TV valued at $2,500

Top Losers Are Winners
TOPS Chapter 401 announced its 2007 winners. Left to right are
Dot Brawnier, first place, Division 3, who lost 29.75 pounds; Dawn
Sparks, an alumni member (KOPS — Keep Off Pounds Sensibly),
who took off 16.75 pounds in 1995 and has kept them off; Teresa
Newton, who lost 55 pounds; Barbara Ervin, another KOPS mem
ber, who lost 16.5 pounds; and Jill Hansard, second place winner,
Division 3, who lost 22.5 pounds. TOPS meets every Tuesday at
6:00 at BJC Medical Center and invites people interested in Taking
Off Pounds Sensibly.
