Tigers Close Out Season Thursday
Parks and Recreation
By Brandon Reed
With the last week of the season
at hand, the Commerce Tigers are
looking for a last surge to try to end
what has been a rough season on
a high note. Last week had its ups
and downs. Sandwiched between
losses last week to Jefferson and
Hebron Academy was the Tigers’
third win of the season, as they
defeated Tallulah Falls.
The win improves Commerce to
3-15, and 3-12 in the region.
The Tigers will close out their
season on Thursday, as they host
Prince Avenue at 5 p.m.
Jefferson
The latest in a series of rough
outings for the Tigers came last
Tuesday, as Commerce hosted
Jefferson and found itself on the
wrong end of a 15-5 score.
Jefferson put five runners across
in the top of the first inning and
added three in the second, while
the Tigers finally got their first run
on the board in the bottom of the
fourth. Jefferson scored again in
the fifth, while the Tigers put three
across in the bottom of the inning
as they attempted to rally. But two
Dragon runs in the sixth, and four
more in the seventh put the nail
in the coffin. Commerce added a
meaningless run in the bottom of
the seventh.
Ethan Thomas had three sin
gles in three trips to the plate.
Jake Flint went 2-for-4, delivering
the Tigers’ lone home run of the
game. Hunter Ward had a pair
of singles in four at-bats, while
Cohen Cooke, T. Green and Josh
Streetman each had singles.
Cook recorded the loss, giving
up seven runs on six hits, while
striking out one.
Tallulah Falls
Commerce traveled to Tallulah
Falls on Thursday hoping to
repeat their success of March 18,
when they defeated the Indians
for their first win of the season.
The Tigers did just that, scoring
in every inning but the seventh to
run up a 9-1 score, pounding out
12 hits in the process.
Reuben Haynes, Green and Carl
Allen had two hits apiece, while
Flint, Mason Westmoreland, Ward,
Luke Hill and Ethan Thomas all
contributed hits.
Haynes picked up the win,

allowing only three hits and strik
ing out 13 batters in six innings.
Hebron Academy
Up next for the Tigers was a
home game with Hebron Christian
Academy on Friday. The Tigers
had lost a close contest to the
Lions back on April 3, and hoped
to turn the final results to their
favor this time.
Commerce put a run on the
board in the top of the first. After
Hebron matched that run in the
bottom of the inning, the Tigers’
made some big moves in the
second, scoring five to take a 6-1
lead.
The Lions responded with a run
in the bottom of the second, while
Commerce added two more in
the third. But Hebron closed to
within one by scoring five in the
bottom of the third. The Tigers
and Hebron each scored a run in
the fourth to keep it close, but the
Lions moved into the lead with a
three-run fifth inning.
After a scoreless sixth,
Commerce had victory in their
grasp with a four-run seventh
inning to take a two-run lead,
only to see Hebron put two run
ners across in the bottom of the
inning to send the game into extra
innings.
After two and half scoreless
innings, Hebron put two more
runs on the board in the bottom
of the tenth to win 15-13.
Haynes and Ward were both hot
at the plate, going 4-for-5, all sin
gles. Green had two singles and
a double in six at-bats, Thomas
went 2-for-4 with two singles,
Josh Streetman went 2-for-6 with
two singles, Chase Barnett went
2-for-6 with two singles, and Flint,
Paul Ford, and Allen all had hits.
Allen recorded the loss, giving
up nine runs in three innings
while striking out two.
Last Week
Coach Walt Massey says he
keeps waiting on the breaks to go
his team’s way.
“I don’t know what to say any
more,” he said. “I just keep wait
ing on us to catch a break, and it
doesn’t seem like we are going to
be able to. At the same time, we
aren’t doing ourselves any favors
when we give up 15 walks in a
game. All I know is this team has
battled through some very tough
times and still given themselves
a chance to win quite often, and
I can’t imagine they will do any
thing differently this final week.”
The Tigers were scheduled to
face Lakeview Academy on the
road on Tuesday. Results were not
available at press time.
CHS To Host Boys State Tourney
Commerce High School will
host the boys’ Class A State Golf

the new owners of Double Oaks

Stephenson. “This is the first time
we have hosted a state champion

volunteers who have stepped up
to help with this undertaking.”

in the tournament will be Athens
Academy, Aquinas, Brookstone,
Bremen, Mt. Paran, Mt. Pisgah

Stephenson says his team is look

“Our team is excited to be able
to play with a home course advan
tage and we are working hard to
make a good showing,” he said.

buoyancy of the water.

Wednesday and Fridays at 11 a.m.

The class will continue through
early August. Cost is $3 per class

be admitted to or allowed during
class.
