'Polly' Pittman
Dorothy Pauline “Polly”
Pittman, 85, of Nicholson, died
Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at
BJC Nursing Home.
Born in Clarke County, she was
the daughter of the late Clarke and
Wreathea Burroughs Crowe. She
was a member of the Gordons
Chapel United Methodist Church
and was a homemaker.
Mrs. Pittman was preceded
in death by her husband, John
“Dub” Pittman.
Survivors include a grandson
and granddaughter-in-law, Keith
and Manda Barnett, Commerce;
granddaughter and friend,
Wanda Barnett and Mark Perry,
Nicholson; great-grandchild,
Kady Barnett, Commerce; niece,
Patsy Doster, Colbert.
Funeral services were held
Friday, May 2, at Nicholson
Baptist Church with the Revs.
Terry Smith and Bob Habeck offi
ciating. Burial was in the Gordons
Chapel United Methodist Church
cemetery.
Little-Ward Funeral Home,
Commerce, was in charge of
arrangements.

Shaun Whitehead
Staff Sergeant Shaun J.
Whitehead, 24, of Ft. Campbell,
Ky., formerly of Maysville,
died Thursday, April 24, 2008,
on dismounted foot patrol in
Iskandariyah, Iraq.
He was a native of Commerce,
the son of Rebecca Whitehead
of Maysville.
He was a
member of the
United States
Army serv
ing in Alpha
Company, 2
ND Battalion,
502 ND
Infantry, Fort
Campbell, Ky.,
as a part of the
101 ST Airborne
Division. He had
been enlisted in the Army since
2003.
Survivors in addition to his
mother, include his wife, Janie
Whitehead, Fort Campbell,
daughter, Janna Whitehead,
Fort Campbell; son, Gabriel
Whitehead, Fort Campbell; sis
ter, Amber Whitehead, Maysville;
grandfather, Coy O’Shields,
Maysville; and many brothers still
serving in Iraq.
Funeral services were held
Saturday, May 3, at the Grove
Level Baptist Church with
Chaplain Scott McKosh offici
ating. Burial was in the Center
Grove Baptist Church cemetery.

was in charge of arrangements.

Carrie Coker
Carrie Miranda Coker, 26, of
Jefferson, died Sunday, May 4,
2008.
She was born on July 4, 1981,
in Jackson County, the daugh
ter of Bobby Scott Coker of
Watkinsville and Sherri and step
father Jerry Dills of Jefferson.
She was a graduate of Jackson
County Comprehensive High
School and a member of Crooked
Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors in addition to her par
ents, include a brother, Nicholas
Sanchas, Jefferson; step-sister,
Erica Coker; grandparents,
Nancy Showalter and Bobby
Coker, both of Jefferson, Sonny
and Jean Morgan, Watkinsville;
great-grandparents, Richard and
Judy Budge, East Andover, N.H.
Funeral services were held
Wednesday, May 7, in the cha
pel of Evans Funeral Home with
the Rev. Willard Thomas officiat
ing. Burial was in Evans Memory
Gardens. Pallbearers were Chris
Bowles, Wayne Dills, Jeremy
Dills, Paul Kent, Justin “Pubs”
Smith and Scott Carter.

'Bill' Barnwell
William Edgar “Bill” Barnwell Jr.,
63, of Lilburn, died Wednesday,
April 30.
Born on December 1, 1944,
he was the son of
the late William
E. Barnwell Sr.
and Lillian Poole
Barnwell. He was
a property insurance adjuster,
and was a veteran, having served
in the United States Army. Mr.
Barnwell was Baptist, a mem
ber of the Indian Creek Baptist
Church, and a member of the
American Legion.
Survivors include a daughter,
Marie Barnwell, Jefferson; sister
and brother-in-law, Kathryn and
Dr. Michael Payne, Kettering,
Ohio; one niece; two nephews;
and several cousins.
Funeral services were held
Sunday, May 4, at the First Baptist
Church of Jefferson with the Rev.
Chuck Cook officiating. A pri
vate family burial preceded the
service in Alta Vista Cemetery in
Gainesville.
Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson,
was in charge of arrangements.

Edward Dodd
Edward Marcus Dodd, 85, of
Athens, died Wednesday, May
30, 2008.
Born on October 18, 1922,
in Hall County, he was the son
of the late Marcus Miles and
Nora Freeman Dodd. He was a
member of the Galilee Christian
Church, where he was a former
elder and a charter member of the
Athens Christian Church. He was
a residential and commercial car
penter, and was a veteran, having
served in the
United States
Army during
World War II.
Mr. Dodd was
preceded in
death by his
wife, Mary
Anglin Dodd;
a sister, Omie
Freeman; and
brothers, Green
Dodd and Dorsey
Dodd.
Survivors include daughters
and sons-in-law, Marie and Jim
Lord, Athens, Debbie and Eddie
L. Pethel, Jefferson, Yvonne and
Mike Settles, Longmont, Colo.;
brother, Jackson Dodd, Marietta;
seven grandchildren; 10 great
grandchildren; numerous nieces
and nephews; and beloved best
companion, Chancey.
Funeral services were held
Friday, May 2, in the Galilee
Christian Church with Minister
Tom Plank and the Rev. Russell
Ruark officiating. Burial was in
the church cemetery. Pallbearers
were Christian Anglin, Jeff Ruark,
Gerald Mize, Tyre Dodd, Jack
Freeman and Ronald Dodd.

Michael Benefield
Michael Ray Benefield, 50, of
Carnesville, died Monday, May
5, 2008, from injuries sustained
in an automobile accident. Born
in Hall County, he was the son of
Willie M. King of Carnesville and
the late Cecil William Benefield.
He was married to Sherry Faye
Benefield, who died from injuries
sustained in the same automobile
accident.
Survivors in addition to his
mother, include daughters, Tina
Ann Benefield and Tammy Faye
Benefield, both of Carnesville;
brothers, Terry, Billy, David
and Randolph Benefield, all
of Carnesville, and Thomas

James Higgins
James Billy Higgins, 71, of Alto,
died Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at
Heartland Hospice, following an
extended illness.
Born in Banks County on
November 17,1936, he was the son
of the late James Ferd and Lula
Martin Higgins. He was a mem
ber of Mt. View Baptist Church,
and was a former chicken farmer
with Fieldale Farms. He enjoyed
spending time with his children
and great-grandchildren as well as
gardening, loved ones stated. Mr.
Higgins was preceded in death
by a son, James Marion Higgins;
sisters, Brenda Sue Higgins, Betty
(Sweet Pea) Farmer and Martha
(Mot) Garner; brothers, Bobby
Higgins, Frank (Buddy) Higgins
and Royce Higgins.
Survivors include his wife of 55
years, Elizabeth Garner Higgins,
Alto; sons and daughter-in-law,
Tim and Penny Higgins, Baldwin,
and Larry Higgins, Winder;
daughters and sons-in-law, Jane
and Robert Thompson, Toccoa,
Jackie and Marcus Mangum,
Alto, Janet Higgins and Jodie
Higgins, both of Alto; sister, Peggy
Payne, Baldwin; brothers, Melvin
Higgins and Donald Higgins,
both of Cornelia, Preston Higgins,
Eatonton, and Johnny Higgins,
Lincolnton, N.C.; eight grandchil
dren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Baptist Church with the Revs.

Timothy Brooks
Timothy Wright Brooks, 48, of
Athens, died Saturday, April 26,
2008.
A native of Charleston, S.C.,
he was the son of Jean Dixon of
Danielsville and the late Jimmie
Wright Brooks.

ion, Margie Lavender; children,
Timothy Brooks, Athens, and
Angel Brooks, Colbert; siblings,
Kim Brooks and Steve Woodall,

Junior Ivester
Junior Ivester, 72, of Commerce,
died Tuesday, April 29, 2008,
at BJC Medical Center in
Commerce.
Born in Stephens County on
March 8, 1936, he was the son
of the late Lemmie Martin and
Eppsie Cheek Ivester and was
Baptist.
Survivors include sisters,
Edith Morrison, Crawford, Betty
McLendon, Mary Whitlock and
Bertie Gordon, all of Commerce.
Graveside services were held
Thursday, May 1, at Mt. Zion
Baptist Church Cemetery with
the Rev. Henry Webb officiating.
