Bubba McDonald Qualifies For Seat On State PSC Bubba McDonald is making yet another foray into politics. The former Commerce resident, former state representa tive and one time candi date for gov ernor quali fied Monday to run for the Public Service Commission. McDonald, McDonald of Clarkes- ville, qualified Monday as a republican to run for Post 4 on the commission that oversees utility rates in Georgia. His plat form is the repeal of sales taxes on utilities. T’m running to make a dif ference for our state,” said McDonald. “There’s no question that we should be bringing even more competition into the state to help lower energy bills for Georgians. We need to ensure that Georgians have a safe, reli able and affordable energy sup ply for the future.” McDonald served on the PSC from 1998 through 2002, hav ing been appointed by Gov. Zell Miller after Mac Barber of Commerce resigned. He seeks the post held by Angela Speir, who has indicated she will not seek re-election. McDonald is a native and long time resident of Commerce, where he served as chief of the Commerce Fire Department, served on the Jackson County Board of Commissioners and had a long career in the Georgia House of Representatives that ended when he ran unsuccess fully for governor in 1996. “People are feeling the pain of higher energy costs, particu larly in the dead of winter and in the hot Georgia summer,” said McDonald. “If elected to serve, I will work on the legislature to eliminate charging the state sales tax on energy bills during these times. My plan will reduce the overall cost of energy bills when Georgians need it the most and would apply to all residential customers.” The Republican Primary is July 15.
