City School Board Approves
New Student Information System

The Commerce School System
will change its student information
system after a vote by the Board of
Education Monday night.
The board voted unanimously
to implement the Infinite Campus
student information system. Ac
cording to superintendent James
E. “Mac” McCoy if the school sys
tem stayed with the current soft
ware, it would cost approximately
$36,000 to upgrade, whereas im
plementing Infinite Campus will
come in under that amount.
Also at Monday night’s meeting,
the board approved the adoption
of new textbooks for math grades
9-12, science grades K-12, AP
books for the added AP art and
history courses, and social studies
books to match the changes in the
graduation policy.
Also approved by the board
were pre-AP science, language
and art classes, to be held at Com
merce Middle School, as well as
a special education pre-k class at
Commerce Primary School.
The board also recognized three
Commerce Elementary School
students. Rashonda White, Cael-
on McDonald and Alec Aquilar
were honored for their essays on
water conservation.
In other business:
•The board heard the March
financial report from director
of finance Ann Stokey, who told
the board that, with 75 percent
of the fiscal year complete, the
system has collected 96 percent
of local taxes projected. Stokey
said as of the meeting, the total
was well over 100 percent for
April. Stokey also told the board
at the end of March, the system
had collected 80 percent of its
projected income for the year.
The system is also at 75 percent
of its expected expenditures for
the year, which Stokey said was
“right on target.”
•McCoy informed the board
that SPLOST revenue was a little
higher than the previous month.
The amount for March was
$111,000, compared to $99,000 in
February.
“We are still on target to meet
what we have to have in order to
make our bond payments,” Mc
Coy said.

Academic Pep Rally
Students at Commerce Elementary School third grade teachers led the children in cheers,

The East Jackson Middle School PTSO recently held a fund-raiser. James and Wanda Thaxton,
parents of Jake Thaxton, enabled their son to win the prize for being top seller at the end of the
fund-raiser. As a reward, Jake was allowed to take two friends and his homeroom teacher, Amy
