A Madison County woman

States.
Kay Pickett, of AC Carey Road,
Danielsville, stopped by The
Madison County Journal office
Monday to drop off an announce
ment of her candidacy.
“I’m serious about this," said
Pickett, who added that she
received 13 votes in the 2004 elec

Hillary.’’
Pickett, who plans to run as
an independent, said she has 33

for “God, USA, all military, all
enforcement, all EMS and fire
fighters and all the people who
are legal U.S. citizens.’’
Pickett said she will represent all
people as president.
“My principles are this, I’m nei
ther Democratic or Republican
— I’m under God,’’ she said. “I
don’t care if you’re an Eskimo or
an Indian. I may not believe what
you believe but I will defend your
right to believe it. My life career
has been serving the USA’’

Jackson EMC To
Renovate Its
Jefferson Office
Demolition teams are on site as
Jackson EMC’s Jefferson District
office undergoes a complete reno
vation.
The construction work to update
the Jefferson office will last
through December, according to
Jim Crawford, Jackson EMC vice
president of customer and district
services.
“We’re asking customers to be
patient with us during renova
tion. Our drive-thru is closed until
September and there’s also a tem
porary front entrance,’’ Crawford
said. 'The Jefferson District office
is nearly 30 years old, and served
us and our members well. We’ve
experienced significant growth
since then, and it’s time to bring
our office up-to-date to better meet
our members’ and employees’
needs. We’ve come a long way
since 1980.’’
The drive-thru is closed; howev
er, the night deposit drop is still
available in the same location. A
wheelchair-accessible temporary
entrance allows customers to make
payments inside the office.
“We divided the project into two
phases in order to minimize the
impact on both our members and
employees. We want to complete
the work while still providing out
standing customer service to mem
bers who wish to walk in and pay
their bills, set up new service or
conduct other business with our
Jefferson District staff,’’ Crawford
said.

South Jackson
To Get Full-Time
Medical Unit
JEFFERSON - By a 3-1 vote
Monday, the Jackson County
Board of Commissioners agreed
to locate a full-time medical unit
in the South Jackson area.
District 3 commissioner Bruce
Yates cast the lone “No’’ vote
after stating that he believes a unit
should be placed in West Jackson
instead. Yates asked EMS direc
tor Steve Nichols about the num
ber of people served in both the
South Jackson and West Jackson
areas.
“It seems to me, we have a larg
er concentration of people who
would reap the benefits in the
West Jackson area, if we had put
one there,’’ Yates said.
While there are more people in
the West Jackson area, Nichols
said the response time there is
faster than in the South Jackson
area. In the West Jackson area,
the average response time is 12
minutes. In the South Jackson
area, the average response time is
22 minutes.
Commissioner Dwain Smith, a
former EMS director, said, “We
are long overdue in getting an
ambulance in that area (South
Jackson). It is the only area that
is not within five miles of an
ambulance. It is needed badly,
not only for that area, but also for
a back-up.’’
Nichols said he and other staff
are working on a long-range plan
for the West Jackson area.
“We know growth is coming
in that Braselton area,’’ he said.
“We are putting a plan together
on this.’’
The new unit in South Jackson
will be in service 24 hours a day
and will serve the South Jackson
and Redstone districts. It will be
in service July 1.
Nichols said at an earlier meet
ing that the new unit will improve
the response time for medical
calls from the South Jackson
area, as well as in Nicholson and
Jefferson. The Nicholson and
Jefferson units now respond to
calls from South Jackson.
The South Jackson unit would
be funded for the remainder of
this year with $120,511 in EMS
revenue funds and $97,289 from
the county general fund.

Glenn Suit Moved
To Federal Court
Jefferson leaders being sued by
former police chief Darren Glenn
have petitioned to have the litiga
tion moved out of the local state
courts and into federal court.
In a motion filed last week,
attorneys for Mayor Jim Joiner,
council members Steve Kinney,
David Varnadoe, C.D. Kidd III,
Bosie Griffith, and current and
former city managers John Ward
and David Clabo moved to have
Glenn’s suit moved to federal
court since it involves employ
ment and civil rights issues.
Glenn filed suit last month
against the officials for their failure
to give him a chance to clear his
name after they fired him in 2006.
Glenn is being represented in the
suit by former Georgia Attorney
General Michael Bowers.

'Urine' In Fountain
HOMER - The assistant princi
pal at Banks County Elementary
School has been placed on leave
pending an investigation into an
alleged incident at the school last
week involving male students hav
ing to drink from a water fountain
in which urine had possibly been
poured into.
Banks County Superintendent
of Schools Chris Erwin said
Monday that he is conducting
an investigation into the incident
which allegedly involving all fifth
grade male students at the school.
BCES school assistant principal
Lori Rylee has been placed on
leave while the investigation is
conducted.
“There are all kinds of rumors
floating around, but we are mov
ing forward with the investiga
tion,’’ Erwin said. “We do not have
a date to have the investigation
finished. We want to be thorough
in covering everything’’
The incident involves whether
fifth grade male students were
made to drink from a water foun
dation after a bottle containing
some liquid was poured into it.
Erwin said there is some question
as to what the substance was,
whether it was urine or Gatorade.
