City Wins Gas Marketing Award
The Commerce Natural Gas
Department won the Municipal
Gas Authority of Georgia’s
(MGAG) Marketing Excellence
Award for the results of its natural
gas marketing program.
Mayor Charles L. Hardy Jr.
accepted the award at MGAG’s
annual membership meeting
May 1.
“We strive to offer our custom
ers a way to save money and
have an appliance in their home
that is energy efficient and eco-
friendly,’’ explains Jim Eubanks,
gas superintendent. “The Rinnai
Tankless Water Heater is an excel
lent solution to both. Not only will
the customer be saving money
on monthly utility costs, they will
also enjoy endless hot water.’’
Commerce was recognized for
its rebate program on those water
heaters. The city offers a $300
rebate for customers who switch
from a current gas water heater to
the Rinnai device. It offers $500
rebates for those who install the
tankless water heater during new
construction or convert from an
electric or propane water heater
to the tankless water heater.
The city has issued some 25
rebates since Aug. 1, according to
Mike Mahalick, regional manager
for MGAG.
'This is by far the most success
ful marketing program we’ve ever
done in Commerce,’’ Mahalick
added.
Steve McKown, the city’s finance
Mayor Charles L. Hardy Jr., left, accepts the Municipal Gas
Authority of Georgia’s “Marketing Excellence Award” from Eric
Groom, regional manager of MGAG. The award recognizes the
city’s success in promoting the use of natural gas.
director and assistant city man
ager, installed one of the tankless
water heaters in his house.
“I took advantage of the promo
tion and received a Rinnai tank
less water heater at an incredible
discounted price,’’ McKown said.
“Because of the cost savings they
offered and the savings I’ll have
with this new energy-efficient
appliance, I’ll be saving approxi
mately $21 a month.’’
The tankless water heater comes
on only when there is a demand
for hot water, and provides it
instantaneously. Since there is no
tank of water to keep heated 24
hours a day — and when no one
is at home — the savings can be
substantial.

Group's Goal: Provide A Home
For Teenagers In Foster Care
The Christian Outreach
Ministry has a simple goal: to
open a home for teenagers who
have been taken from their
families by the state and have
nowhere else to go.
The plan is to open the
Amanda House this summer in
the former home of Pat Ward on
Hwy. 335 in Nicholson, which
would provide love, protection
and sustenance for 12 girls ages
12-18. But Christian Outreach
must raise $57,000 first, the Rev.
Chad Rising, vice president for
community development, told
the Commerce Kiwanis Club last
Thursday.
The house would accept foster
children from Banks, Barrow and
Jackson counties — the Piedmont
Circuit.
“We feel like these kids are
our responsibility,’’ said Rising,
who expressed the hope that “the
community will see the need and
partner with us.’’
The group has sold more than
200 tickets to its first major fund
raiser, the “Amanda’s Blessing
Banquet and Silent Auction,’’
which will be held at the Jefferson
Civic Center May 24. Tickets are
$40 per person or $300 for a
table of eight. Call 706-757-2161
or 706-335-6084 for tickets.
The concept came from
Bob Morgan of The Christian
Outreach Center, who realized
the need for homes for teenag
ers after he and his wife began

taking in foster children. The
first home, “Amanda House,’’ is
named for a foster child who
came to them at age 21/2 in a
full body cast. They adopted her,
and later three boys, and came to
understand the need for homes
for older foster children.
The problem, explained Rising,
is that “many foster parents in our
community are doing a good job
but won’t take teenagers either
because of the issues they bring
with them or because they have
younger children and don’t think
it would be a good mix.’’ Local
teens under state care are often
housed in shelters many miles
away, he said.

Maysville Plans Meeting To
Discuss Ways To Save Gasoline
The City of Maysville will have
a special called meeting at 6 p.m.
Thursday, May 29, at the public
library to discuss ways to con
serve gasoline.

little,’’ Rising explained, adding
that often all of their possessions
are carried in a single plastic
grocery bag.
The goal is to open the Amanda
House, a sprawling 6,000-plus-
square-foot house on six acres,
followed at some future time
by the Austin House, named
after Morgan’s second adopted
child. First, Christian Outreach
Ministry needs $75,000.
There already ongoing expens
es, including a mortgage pay
ment and the salary of an execu
tive director. Before opening, six
full-time and six part-time staff
will be hired to assure that two
people will be on duty at all
times, 24 hours a day.
The state will pay approximate
ly 68 percent of the $108 per day
it costs per child. The local effort
is to raise the other 32 percent.
“We need community assis
tance to make this a reality,’’
Rising told the Kiwanis Club.
“Since December of ‘07, we
have turned down 20 kids,’’ he
noted. “If we were open, we’re
pretty sure we’d have the house
full.’’
The Christian Outreach
Ministry received a $15,000 grant
from the Jackson EMC founda
tion. The money was used to pro
vide new central air and heating
systems and kitchen appliances
at the Amanda House.
The group also sold “sponsor
bricks’’ at $100 apiece.
