Companies Continue To
Show Interest In Jackson
By Angela Gary
While a slowdown in the econ
omy has stopped residential de
velopment throughout the coun
try Jackson County continues to
make the short list for companies
planning new projects.
Walgreens has announced it will
locate a distribution center in the
county while seven other compa
nies are looking at sites in Jackson.
An update on these projects was
given at the Jackson County Area
Chamber of Commerce board of
directors lunch meeting May 16 in
Jefferson.
'They (the seven companies)
are looking at a lot of places but
at least they are looking here too,”
chamber director Roy Stowe said.
A list of the projects, which have
not been identified and have been
given code names, includes the
following:
•Project Sun Streak, 400,000
square feet, 100 jobs and $12 mil
lion investment.
•Project Razor, 50 acres, 75 to
150 employees and $35 million
investment.
•Project Phoenix, 140,000
square feet (expandable to 300,000
square feet), 175 employees and
$18 million investment.
•Project Heron, 250 acres, 120
employees and $150 million in
vestment.
•Project Point, 150,000 square
feet, 65 employees and $42 mil
lion investment.
In other business at the meeting,
chamber president Shane Short
gave an update on several pro
grams, including the following:
•Small Business Development
Council: The council created a
survey for members on the needs
for small businesses. The commit

ning how to implement the results
of the survey.

for the year.

McDuffie and Bo Braswell will
serve as co-chairman of the fund
raiser planned for September.

into a bunch of people who said
they are coming, but could not
make it to the meeting.”
Vendors promised to provide,
in season, several kinds of corn,
tomatoes, okra, squash, lettuces,
watermelons, herbs, potted plants,
peppers, eggs and cut flowers,
Craver said.
The farmers’ market started last
year, averaging five to eight ven
dors. Craver expects more this
year.
“I was at a Mainstreet meet
ing in Philadelphia where they
talked about farmers’ markets,”
he explained. “They said it takes
three years to get them up and
viable. The first year, you have
five or six vendors, the next year
it increases by a few and the third
year it becomes a community
mainstay.”
The hours are listed at 7-11 a.m„
but Craver acknowledged that
most vendors sold out of their
items well before the announced
closing time.
This year, the Commerce Lions
Club will assist with the Commerce
market. Once a month, the club
will set up the banners and help
the vendors.
Craver said the vendors especial
ly wanted to be in Commerce June
28, which is the date the market is
scheduled to be in Jefferson.

Kenny Rogers library Board Re-Elects Officers,
Bunding ! Iome Pon< j ers Changes To Its Bylaws
In Nicholson ° 3
Nicholson’s newest resident will
also be its most famous.
Singer-songwriter Kenny Rogers
is building a house on a secluded
150 acres across Hwy. 335 from
Staghorn Plantation Estates.
A story in The Atlanta Journal-
Constitution last week quoted
Rogers as describing the pro
posed house and property as
“kind of like Disneyland with
animals.”
Rogers, 69, and his wife, Wanda,
and their twin 4-year-old sons live
in Buckhead. Rogers has placed
their home on the market for
$7.95 million.
The Commerce Library Board
re-elected its officers Monday
night. With five members and
five officers, everyone holds
down a title.
Ann Rhoads was re-elected
chairman, Richard Chambers
vice chairman, Mary Wood sec
retary, Sam Chaney treasurer
and Anne Rogers as parliamen
tarian.
In other business, the board
went over its bylaws, making a
few minor changes and editing
redundant wording. Once the re
vised version is typed, the board
will vote on the changes.
Chief among them is a change
in wording to allow the authority
to meet less frequently, possibly
every other month.
Piedmont Regional Library
Director Alan Harkness had
suggested that the board reduce
its meeting frequency, so Cham
bers proposed altering the word
ing in the bylaws to make that
possible.
Wood appeared to favor less
frequent meetings.
“There’s nothing we do in these
meetings that couldn’t be done
every other month,” she said.
Rogers opposes that change.
“It keeps you thinking about
the library,” she insisted.
Chambers did not indicate a
position on meeting frequency.
He just pointed out that the
bylaws change would give the
board the flexibility to reduce
the frequency of meetings if it
so chooses.
Another proposed change is
to require at least three “yea”
votes to hire or fire a library di
rector.
The board also adopted a new
set of “library rules,” including a
paragraph about certain behav
iors that “may result in prosecu
tion.” Those include rude or pro
fane language and destructive or
threatening behavior.
