'Surf's Up' In Spencer
Park Friday Night At 8:30
The Commerce Downtown
Development Authority will of
fer its final event in the Fridays
After Five series at Spencer
Park.
The G-rated movie, “Surf’s Up,"
which provides an inside look
at the Penguin World Surfing
Championship, will be shown at
about 8:30 in the park, which is
located on South Elm Street.
There is no admission charge,
and families are encouraged
to visit local restaurants to get
food for a picnic supper in the
recently renovated park.

is the primary parking lot serving
both the Commerce Civic Center
and the Commerce Cultural
Center. The plan calls for grading
the grassy vacant lot across from
City Hall to expand the parking
area, and to provide landscaping,
lighting and signage.
According to Ariail, the DDA’s
Design Committee plans to pres
ent a proposal to the city council
this summer regarding updating
the parking ordinance, improve
ment to several parking lots and
the improvement of signs direct
ing motorists to those lots. First,
he said, it will develop a proposed
priority list of improvements.
Council Agrees
At Monday night’s city council
work session, Hill repeated his
assertions, and Mayor Charles
L. “Buzzie’’ Hardy Jr. said he,
Mayor Pro Tem Dusty Slater and
Councilman Richard Massey
would work with members of
the DDA’s Design Committee to
come up with a plan.
Hill briefed the council on the
total parking situation, including
the need to acquire an additional
lot behind State Street and the
need to improve the parking lot
across from the civic center.
All parties seemed to agree that
the lot behind the civic center is
the first priority.
“The one behind the civic cen
ter — it is so important that we
get it renovated, lighted and land
scaped,’’ said Councilman Bob
Sosebee, who also chairs the
DDA.
Hill reminded the council of
the various new businesses and
other buildings being renovated
for which parking spaces will be
needed.
“What we don’t want to happen
is for the businesses to invest in
the downtown and not be able to
succeed because there’s no place
to park a car,’’ Hill said.

of chicken wings, in addition
to salads, buffalo tenders, ribs,
eight kinds of burgers and a host
of other sandwiches, wraps and
appetizers. It has applied for a
license to serve beer and wine.
Meanwhile, Billy Allen contin
ues to work on a “very unique
lease’’ with the U.S. Army, which
would like to place a recruiting
office at his North Elm Street
building, according to Craver.
Subway, he added, is considering
a move to the old Hood Building
on North Elm Street.
“That would be our first fran
chise restaurant in the downtown,’’
commented Sosebee. ‘They add a
lot to Jefferson’s downtown, and I
think they’d do a lot better than in
the empty Ingles location.’’
— Threat To City Drinking Water
Cont. from Page 1A
project — which includes a dozen
structures containing 96,000 lay
ing hens apiece — are within that
range, according to Harbin.
“It can be a pretty nasty facility,’’
said Harbin.
The chicken manure generated
at the plant would be self-con
tained, but the city’s concern is
from the washing of the eggs,
according to Harbin. There is no
sewer service in the area.
The Madison County Board
of Commissioners rejected an
attempt by Country Charm to
build a plant on Jot-Em-Down
Road after strong objections from
citizens.
The letter reminds Hart that the
city reservoir is a drinking water
source for Maysville and parts of
Banks County as well as the city.
“We ... request your attention to
enforcing the provisions of the
watershed protection plan as it
applies to protecting the Grove
River Reservoir from commercial
egg production,’’ the letter says.
“The potential contamination
from this facility above the Grove
River poses a direct threat to the
city’s drinking water reservoir. It
is in the best interest of public
health that we continue to provide
a safe and reliable drinking water
system to both your citizens as
well as our customers.’’
