Gas Station Fire Destroys Truck
The Banks County Fire Department quickly extin
guished a spectacular blaze at the Banks Crossing
RaceTrac gas station early Wednesday afternoon,
July 16.
Fire Chief Gary Pollard said a man was cleaning
out a set of fuel tanks at the gas station at about 1
p.m. when fuel being pumped from the storage tank
into a tank in his truck apparently landed on the
pump motor’s exhaust, starting the fire. The truck
was totally destroyed.
“We think some gas flew out out and landed on the
engine on his pump," said Pollard. “He had a hold
ing tank in the back of the truck and a pump. What
we’re thinking is that some kind of fuel popped out
onto the exhaust, maybe, and caught fire.’’
Pollard said deputies of the Banks County Sher
iff’s Office were first on the scene “and they did
a great job evacuating and trying to secure the
scene.’’
“We had units there pretty quick and had a real
quick knockdown on it,’’ Pollard added. “We did
call Commerce for mutual aid because we had a
house fire in the northern part of the county at the
same time.’’
No one was injured. Damage to a nearby fuel
pump was slight, Pollard said.
Commerce Police Dept. Arrests
Rolling Domestic
Dispute Results
In Arrests Of Two
A North Carolina couple
coming back from a church
conference got into a rolling
domestic dispute on Inter
state 85 that ran at least one
vehicle off the road.
The Commerce Police De
partment responded to the
call after receiving a look
out for a vehicle in which
the driver and passenger
were exchanging blows and
swerving all over the road.
The incident report said
the Georgia State Patrol
made the stop, but city po
lice lodged the charges.
The cause of the dispute
was not mentioned, but the
report said the two were on
their way from a church con
ference to pick up her son
when they began arguing.
Witnesses — who had
called 911 — told police that
they’d observed the couple
for 10 minutes before they
realized what was going on
and called 911. They then
followed the suspects’ ve
hicle for another 20 min
utes as the two continued to
fight. At one point, the wit
nesses said, another vehicle
had to leave the roadway to
avoid an accident.
Police charged Marland
Dwight Fearrington, 47, 15
Sydenham Court, Durham,
NC, with two counts of bat
tery and two of reckless
driving. They charged Sonya
Dorothea Fearrington, 41, of
the same address with one
count of battery and one of
interference with a driver.
