“Lakeview is also on a level
above us, but not nearly to the
extent Athens is,” Thomas said. “I
thought we looked really sluggish
against them and unfortunately it
came at a time when we had a lot
of folks watching.”
Thomas said the impression the
team gave the fans in this match is
not the one it wants them to get.
“We couldn’t move to the ball,
we didn’t play together, and we
couldn’t serve.”
Tallulah Falls
The final match of the day came
against Tallulah Falls, and marked
one of East Jackson’s best stands
of the day. After a sluggish start in
set one, resulting in a 25-18 loss,
the Lady Eagles came alive with
a great effort to win the second
set 25-17. But they lost 25-17 in
the final.
“This was the best match of the
day,” Thomas said.
One of the day’s big moments
for East Jackson came when
junior Ansley Brooks took a shot
off her face. Mikki McGinnis kept
the ball in the air, and the Lady
Eagles won the point.
“That shot kind of rallied the
girls and helped to end the day on

Eagles went on to win the point. Photo by Justin Poole
a good note as we played the best
we have so far in this match.”
Thomas said that since the
team played four matches, three
JV girls dressed with the varsity.
One, sophomore Jenna Dukes,
played well enough that she was
promoted to the varsity squad on
the spot.
The Lady Eagles have a little
time to catch their breath now.
Their next match-ups will come on
Monday, when they host Rabun
County and Clarke Central.
Eagles Prepare For 2008 C.C. Season
By Brandon Reed
With time growing short before
the beginning of the 2008 com
petitive season, the East Jackson
Eagles Cross Country teams con
tinue to prepare for their sopho
more year.
The boys hope to follow up
on a strong freshman season
that saw them end as the 8-AA
champs.
Coach Bob Roller says the team
looks good so far during the pre
season.
“The boys are going to be com
petitive,” Roller said. “They’re
looking pretty good.”
Roller points to several runners
he thinks are key to the team’s
strength, including seniors Chris
White and Andy Van Deventer,
juniors Brandon Banks, Josh
Kesler, Kevin Kesler, Terry Miller
and Eric Van Deventer, and
sophomore Blake Allbright.
“We’re coming along,” Roller
said. “We’re not speed demons,
EJCHS Softball
but we’re all running about the
same time.”
Roller said there are a lot of
newcomers, and said several
freshmen, including Josh Carney
and Edward Stone, are showing
promise.
“They’re starting to pull their
weight a little bit,” he said.
Last year, the boys won seven
of 12 meets, and five members
were named to the All-Region
team.
Pre-season polling slates the
boys to finish fourth, but Roller
expects a better finish.
“Of course, we won it last year,
so maybe we can do something
with it this year,” he said.
As for the girls, Roller says the
team continues to improve. The
Lady Eagles placed fifth in the
region last year, and missed a
trip to state by only two points.
Seniors Hope Boggs and Erika
Deshone continue to improve,
Roller said, while sophomore
Sherry Blalock, last year’s top
runner, continues to perform
steadily in the pre-season.
Roller also pointed to sopho
more Jessica Harper and junior
Alexis Powell as strong points for
the girls, as well as newcomers
Kassie Mull, Dakota Chandler
and Courtney Clark.
“The biggest thing with the
girls is trying to overcome some
aches and pains,” he said. “We’re
not as far along as we’d like to be
at this point.”
Pre-season polling puts the
East Jackson girls fifth in the
region. Last year, the team won
two meets.
Roller is optimistic about both
teams.
“We’ll see what happens. We’re
not as far along with the girls as
we are with the boys. Right now,
I’ve got 25 boys and 14 girls on
our varsity program. We’ll get
a few more out before Labor
Day.”

Love Grabs Win No. 15, Hill Goes 3-3
By Brandon Reed
As much time as he’s spent
there, you'd think Maysville’s
Joey Love could set up shop in
Lanier National Speedway’s vic
tory lane.
Love grabbed win number 15
of the year Saturday night in the
Outlaw Modified Division, hold
ing off Chris Holbrook for the
victory. Mark Wilbanks, of Lula,
won his second Truck Division
race of the year at Lanier
Saturday night. Braselton’s Shane
Sawyer finished third in the Pro
Late Model event, behind win
ner Shawn Simpson and second
place finisher Rodney Benefield.
Jefferson’s Bobby Hill picked
up another win Saturday night
in the Hobby class at Toccoa
Speedway. It was Hill’s third win
in a row at the dirt track.
Commerce’s Ty Lowe was hop
ing to pick up another victory
this weekend, but trouble gave
him an 18th place finish instead
Friday night.
One race after picking up his
first career GAS win, Jefferson’s
Nick Potts earned a second-place
finish at New Senoia Raceway
Saturday night. Potts was flagged
as the third-place finisher but
was moved up to second after
Chris Dilbeck was disqualified

for refusing a post-race engine
inspection. The finish was
Potts ninth top 10 finish in nine
events in 2008. Dacula’s Russell
Fleeman finished ninth. Rookie
of the Year contender T.J. Reaid
picked up the win, the first of his
GAS series career.
Former Jefferson resident Ryan
Crane had a rough weekend in the
Chill 100 at Five Flags Speedway
in Pensacola, FL, Friday night.
After starting seventh, engine
troubles plagued the number 10
Ford, and Crane finished in 23rd.
Senoia’s Bubba Pollard picked
up the win.
Lilburn’s Ken Butler III improved
on a bad qualifying run to finish
13th in Sunday’s Allen Crowe
100 for the ARCA series at the
Illinois State Fairgrounds, a race
run on a one-mile fairgrounds
dirt track. Watkinsville’s John
Wes Townley finished 15th, while
Suwanee driver Michael Phelps
finished 17th. Nine-time ARCA
champion Frank Kimmel took
the win.
Sugar Hill’s Kurt Johnson made
it to the Pro Stock semi-final
round of Sunday’s NHRA Toyo
Tires Nationals in Reading, PA,
but made it no further, as he red-
lighted against Jeg Coughlin, who
went on to win.
