Agri-Cycle, County
Reach Accord,
Drop All Lawsuits
Agri-Cycle and Jackson County
have agreed to drop all lawsuits re
lated to the closing of the Talmo
plant and the company owners
have agreed to no longer accept
waste at the facility.
The Jackson County Board of
Commissioners approved a settle
ment agreement with Agri-Cycle
Monday night. The case was set
to go to trial this fall.
The Talmo wastewater treatment
plant was shut down last year be
cause of violations of the permit.
Lawsuits were filed by both Agri-
Cycle and Jackson County. The
settlement calls for all of these
lawsuits to be dropped.
Agri-Cycle will not be allowed to
use the property from any outside
source “unauthorized waste for
storage or treatment." The settle
ment also calls for the property to
be zoned A-2.
The Georgia Environmental Pro
tection Division documented nu
merous alleged violations of the
permit during several inspections
last year. After a fire was report
ed at the holding pond, the EPD
asked the Superior Court to shut
down the plant.
The facility had been the source
of a large public outcry in the Tal
mo area over odors coming from
the waste treatment spray fields
and holding ponds.

Jefferson Gets
Grant To Conduct
Study Of Trees
The city of Jefferson received
$4,780 from the Georgia
Forestry Commission’s Urban
and Community Forestry Grant
Program to conduct a tree inven
tory.
The purpose of the project is
to enable the city of Jefferson to
better manage its urban forest
resources by:
• inventorying and assessing
all of Jefferson’s park and street
trees.
• providing data in an accessible
electronic format, along with GIS
map layers.
• developing a prescriptive man
agement plan for the city’s park
and street trees.
“This important community
grant will help us determine how
many trees shade the places we all
visit and enjoy, what species are
growing, the trees’ overall health
and what everyone can do to con
serve and cultivate our city’s vital
tree canopy," said Mary Dugan,
chair of the Jefferson Heritage
Tree Council. “Even years from
now, this inventory will serve as a
benchmark to see how our united
efforts are paying off in benefit."

Can Paid Fireman
Be Elected To
Fire District Board?
BRASELTON - The West
Jackson Fire Board has one tough
personnel question to consider in
the coming weeks.
Does the elected board allow
one of its paid firefighters to seek
the public’s favor as a representa
tive to the fire board?
It’s a question that could be
settled during the board’s regular
meeting Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m.
That’s when the board’s attorney is
expected to weigh in on the issue.
The West Jackson Fire Board is
an elected board responsible for
setting budgets, handling a fire tax
in West Jackson and determining
firefighter salaries for the West
Jackson Fire Department.
Assistant fire chief Joel Keith is
seeking election to the five-mem
ber board in November. He was
the only person to qualify for the
Post 4 spot, which is currently held
by chairman Terrell Gunter.
Gunter said during a called meet
ing Thursday that he has received
comments from the public ques
tioning the potential conflict of
interest of having a paid firefighter
serve on the fire board.
After a 25-minute closed-door
session, the fire board opted to
table the issue until its next regular
meeting, when the board’s attor
ney can provide advice.
