Man's Death
Commerce Police Levy Drug Charges Against 4
The Commerce Police
Department is investigat
ing the curious circum
stances of an Athens
man’s death.
A white male and white
female brought Freddy
Sharrell, 28, into the BJC
Hospital emergency room
Friday according to the
police report on the inci
dent. They said he’d been
in a motorcycle accident,
apparently on the south
side of Athens, and they’d
picked him up “on the side
of the road.”
Hospital personnel said
he was in “serious condi
tion’’ when he was brought
in.
Sharrell died at the hos
pital. The male witness was
gone when police arrived,
but the woman told police
Sharrell did not want to
go to an Athens hospital,
and they “rode around’’
with him. When he became
disoriented and unrespon
sive, they happened to be
in Commerce, she said,
so they took him to BJC
Hospital.
At one point, the report
suggested he’d been in
a 4-wheeler accident. At
another point, the report
referenced a motorcycle
accident.
The Commerce Police
Department charged four
people with drug-related
offenses last week.
Among them were Louie
Richard Beasley, 47, 538
Hwy. 326, Commerce, and
John Wesley Gaines, 57,
522 Hwy. 326, Commerce.
Both were charged
with possession of crack
cocaine and possession of
tools (crack pipes) for the
commission of a crime fol
lowing a traffic stop Friday
morning at 1:56 on the
bypass.
Beasley, the driver, was
also charged with fleeing
and attempting to elude,
failure to maintain a lane,
driving under the influence
(DUI), speeding and viola
tion of the open container
law.
Officers allegedly recov
ered two rocks of crack
cocaine concealed in a pack
of cigarettes in Beasley’s
possession and two “sliv
ers’’ of crack cocaine from
the passenger seat occu
pied by Gaines.
Others arrested during
the past week include:
• Lisa Davis Johnson, 40,
3137 Hwy. 174, Danielsville,
for possession of prescrip
tion drugs (including four
that were narcotic), public
drunkenness and viola
tion of the open contain
er law. She was arrested
after an officer saw her
on her hands and knees
in a ditch at the intersec
tion of Clayton Street and
Waterworks Road. She
allegedly told the offi
cer she was fine and was
“just praying,’’ but he dis
covered a number of pill
bottles in her pocketbook,
most of which had pills
in them other than those
indicated on the label. The
purse also contained a
bottle of vodka, and the
officer noted that Johnson
was unsteady on her feet
and her clothes were in
disorder.
•Wendell Lloyd
Pritchard, 41, 3137 Hwy. 174,
Danielsville, possession of
crack cocaine and pedestri
an in the roadway after an
officer saw him exit the car
of a known drug dealer. The
driver left the scene, but a
search of Pritchard turned
up a rock of crack cocaine
in Pritchard’s back pocket,
which the suspect said was
put in his pocket by the
drug dealer “because he’s
bigger than me.’’ At the jail,
Pritchard was also found to
be wearing a “satin wom
an’s nightie,’’ which he said
the drug dealer forced him
to wear, the report said.
• Larry Dwayne Holcomb,
22, 3332 Blacks Creek
Church Road, Commerce,
driving with a suspended
license and a windshield
violation.
•Bobby Joe Money, 36,
P.O. Box 525, Ila, driving
with a suspended license,
obstruction of officers,
improper stopping in
the road and on a Banks
County warrant.
• Ramiro Reyna Calderon,
26, 500 Kathwood Drive,
Commerce, speeding and
driving without a license.
•Terrell Moore, 35, 505
Norwood Circle, Athens,
probation violation.
•Isaac Mallory, 44, 1423
Fairbanks Street, Atlanta,
on an unspecified warrant.
• Christy Leigh Escoe,
27, 85 Faye Carey Road,
Danielsville, failure to
appear.
Charge Leads To Suspension Of Pastor
The pastor of Warren
Chapel United Methodist
Church has been suspend
ed pending the resolution
of a felony charge levied
by Duluth police. The Rev.
Anthony Joe Howell, 54, is
accused of impersonating a
police officer during a traf
fic stop for speeding.
Gwinnett officials say
Howell produced a fake
badge and claimed to be
a DeKalb County police
officer before changing his
story to claim he was a
police chaplain and then a
military police officer.
The charge led Methodist
officials to suspend Howell,
who lives in Buford, pend
ing resolution of the case,
said Arthur Lee Pattman,
the certified lay speaker for
Warren Chapel.
'The Bishop made the
decision to suspend him,’’
Pattman said, “until he goes
