Tigers To Face Spartans In Region Contest
Commerce Takes Beating From Lincoln County, 35-6 Loss
By Justin Poole
Tiger fans will want to add Friday night
to the list of things better left forgotten.
Commerce dropped another game in the
2008 season, this time to Lincoln County,
35-6, leaving the Tigers with a 1-3 record
going into this Friday’s region game
against undefeated Athens Academy.
Athens Ac ademy has defeated Commerce
in five of the last seven match-ups. The
last time the Tigers defeated the Spartans
was in 2005, 14-6. That is not to say
Commerce has rolled over just yet. In the
2006 game, Commerce fell by one point
10-9 and by three points in 2007, 27-24.
Friday night offers Commerce a chance
to jump back into the fire as the Tigers
travel to Athens to face the Spartans at
7:30 p.m.
Lincoln County
Friday night put a dampener on the
Tigers and not just from the drizzling
rain. Lincoln County was by far favored to
win the game, but diehard fans probably
expected more than the single touchdown

plays compared to Lincoln’s 450 yards
on 47.
Chase Bowen kept the Tigers from being
blanked Friday night scoring on a 20-yard
rush to tie the Red Devils 6-6 in the first
quarter. Bowen picked up 101 yards on 16
attempts for the game. Jon Cash averaged
5.6 yards on seven attempts picking up a
total of 39 yards, while Phillip Edwards
rushed for 39 yards on 16 attempts. Jovan
Womack had the third longest rush for
Commerce at 13 yards picking up a total
of 18 yards on eight attempts.
Commerce was late in getting an arm
into the game. Edwards attempted two
passes and the one completion to Deon
Osborne gained 28 yards for the Tigers in
the fourth quarter.
Jesse Savage had an interception on
defense. Casey Drinkard totaled the most
tackles, seven, including five assists, fol
lowed by Doug Maloch with six, includ
ing four assists, and Terrance Martin
totaling five tying with Josh Streetman,
each making four solo tackles.

Eagles Trounced By Riverside 44-6, Host Banks Co. Fri.
By Brandon Reed
There’s no other word for it. For the East Jackson Eagles,
Friday night was painful.
The pain was dished out by the Eagles of Riverside
Military Academy, who trounced the “Pride of the East Side”
44-6 in Gainesville.
The Eagles will have to put the loss behind them this week,
as they prepare to host the Banks County Leopards Friday
night. The Leopards come into Friday night’s match up off
a 12-7 loss to North Oconee.
Side by side, the Leopards have scored 132 points to East
Jackson’s 31. However, the Eagles have allowed fewer points
to be scored against them than the Leopards, 134 to 140.
Game time Friday night is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Marching Orders
Early on, it appeared that East Jackson might be able
to match Riverside closely on the gridiron. The closest
Riverside could get to the end zone came just over four min
utes into the game, when they scored a field goal for 39 yards
out to get their first three points on the board.
Thirty seconds later, East Jackson fans were on their feet
as Deon Sewell ran a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
After a failed PAT, East Jackson led 6-3 with 7:26 remaining
in the quarter.
But that was the first and last time the Eagles led the game.
It was also the last time the Eagles scored on the night, as
Riverside took control, and marched down the field almost
at will.
Riverside broke into the end zone again with just over three
minutes remaining in the first quarter to retake the lead 10-6.
They would score again at the end of the quarter to move
ahead 16-6.
Things fared no better for East Jackson in the second

Commerce Prepares For Final Region Game
By Justin Poole
After picking up a pair of region vic
tories last week, the Commerce Lady
Tigers will focus on winning their last
three regular-season games, one of which
is a region contest.
The Tigers beat Towns County 10-1 and
Social Circle 6-4 last week. They took
on Prince Avenue Tuesday in another big
region game but scores were not available
at press time. Check www.mainstreet-
newssports.com for more information.
The Tigers were scheduled to play
Banks County today (Wednesday) at
home, host AAA Johnson on Thursday,
then travel to Hebron Christian next
Tuesday for the last game of the season.
While Banks and Johnson are not region
games, coach Pam Canup said the ladies
still regard both as very important, since
Commerce is now looking for placement
at sectionals. Both games will be at home
and start at 5 p.m.
Tuesday’s away game at Hebron
Christian Academy offers the ladies one
final shot to add another win to the region
column before sectionals. The Tigers
play Hebron at 4:45 p.m.
Towns County
The Lady Tigers continued their recent
winning streak with a 10-1 victory over
Towns County.
Brooklynn Stinchomb fanned 11 bat
ters, walked two and gave up only three
hits. At the plate the Lady Tigers were
productive, with CJ Wilkes going 4-for-
4, scoring each time and driving in two
runs. Brittany Beauchamp scored twice
and drove in two. Bekah Andrews made
contact once but drove in four runs.
Social Circle
Commerce was in a bad spot going
into the sixth inning in Thursday’s game
against Social Circle. The Lady Redskins
had Commerce down 4-0.
The Lady Tigers rallied in the sixth,
scoring three, then held the Indians in the
bottom half of the inning before scoring
three more runs in the top of the seventh
to defeat the Lady Redskins 6-4.
