Fall Festival And
Plant Swap Set
At library Saturday
The Commerce Friends of
the Library will break new
ground this Saturday with
a first-ever (for them) Fall
Festival for children and
families from 11 to 3 in the
library’s parking lot.
Piggy-backing on the
Friends’ annual Fall Plant
Swap, the festival will cel
ebrate National Friends
of the Library Week with
music, food, face-painting,
and balloons. Also included:
booths providing informa
tion on some of the library’s
programs and services, such
as the quilters’ group, writ
ers’ group, Book Vine, and
children’s programs.
The Plant Swap typically
brings out local gardeners
to trade bulbs, roots, corms,
seeds, runners, and cuttings
with other gardeners, and
coincides with fall garden
ing demands like thinning
of bulbs and pruning of
shrubs.
Haunted Library
Another ground-breaker
lies ahead as library staff
ers and volunteers try their
hands at creating a “Haunted
Library" within the regular
library. The public is invit
ed to come (if they dare)
Thursday, Oct. 30, from
5 to 8 p.m. for a haunting
Halloween open house.
Costumes are optional in
the Haunted Library, and
younger children will be
treated to crafts and games
in the Children’s Library
while the older and more
intrepid youngsters check
out a dark and scary meet
ing room. “It’s all free and
all fun," says children’s
librarian Catherine Harris.
“Sort of a dress rehearsal for
Halloween!"
Parents and caregivers,
meanwhile, will have a
chance to look over some
of the chilling literature on
display, including the works
of Edgar Allan Poe, Stephen
King, Dean Koontz, and
other masters of the maca
bre.
