They write books about people like her. A cancer survivor. A teacher.
A scholar. A wife. An adventurer. A world-class athlete at the age of 52.
A woman who inspires others by her actions and her attitude. And now,
the irony and cruelty of it all is that cancer is back for the second time. So
she shaves her head and she smiles that beautiful smile and gets ready for
a fight. Because she's not giving up. And neither are we.

Residents of the
Northwoods Subdivision
off Mount Olive Road don’t
want to be kept in the dark.
With 37 houses built on
the 57 lots in the first
phase, but only 25 of them
occupied and the builders
closing down, the ques
tion becomes who now
pays for the electricity
that powers the 28 street
lights?
The Commerce City
Council is mulling over that
question. Although the sub
division is in the city limits,
Jackson EMC, not the city,
Deadline Set For Kids' Photos
The deadline for accepting photos for MainStreet
Newspapers’ annual children’s Christmas section will be
Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 5 p.m.
Parents are asked to submit photos early, as photos
received after the deadline will not be published.
The special section will be in the newsstands of The
Jackson Herald, The Commerce News and The Banks County
News Wednesday, Dec. 24.
The newspapers will be accepting photographs of children
age 8 years and younger. The child must live in Jackson or
Banks counties. Photos of grandchildren will be taken only
if the child resides with the grandparents (which must be
stated when submitting the photo).
Please submit the following information along with the
child’s photo: The first and last name and age of each child
shown, as well as the parents’ names, their city of residence
and phone number. Photos submitted without all of the
information may not be published.
provides the electricity.
Supposedly, the builders
are liable for those costs,
but they will soon be out of
the picture. One builder has
already gone out of busi
ness; another is winding
up a few houses, officials
reported.
City Manager Clarence
Bryant said he contacted
six other cities with electric
systems to see how they
handled such cases.
“None of them have the
problem we encountered
here,’’ said Bryant. “They
either control the territory
or don’t fool with it.’’
Bryant suggested making
the homeowners associa
tion pay the bill or sending
bills to the owners of hous
es closest to each light. He
pointed out that Jackson
EMC’s policy is to bill the
individuals who ask for
streetlights.
Councilman Bob Sosebee
proposed that the total elec
tric bill be divided among
the number of lots or houses
and the cost will be added
to their Commerce util
ity bills. The city provides
water, sewer and garbage
services.
“They don’t need to be in
a dark subdivision, but we
don’t need to be subsidiz
ing them,’’ Sosebee com
mented .
