Mat Tigers Look Forward To Season
By Justin Poole
Commerce's wrestling team has reason for
optimism.
The Tigers have a number of returning start
ers and state tournament placers and qualifiers
after last season’s fourth-place finish at the state
tournament and a 21-3 dual record.
Coach Kendall Love said the team should
be competitive as the grapplers get into their
weight classes.
Leading the squad will be Doug Maloch, who
won the state title at 112 pounds last February.
Also returning are Addison Davis, Thomas
Sears, Casey Drinkard, Nick Arostegui, Phillip
Edwards, Terrence Martin and Jon Cash, all of
whom placed at state, along with Tyler Austin,
Chase Bowen and Andrew Minish, each of

Many of the grapplers are coming to the mat
straight from the football field, but Love is not
worried.
“I have been pleased with the work ethic of
the guys that are already out and practicing,”
said Love. "The guys have been working hard
so far.”

Lady Tigers
The Lady Tigers are slightly
behind their intended goals,
but have shown definite signs
of improvement, says assistant
coach Barry Cook.
Cook will take the reins as
coach Eddie McCurley recov
ers from a recent hunting acci
dent.
He said he is impressed by
the girls' work ethic and their
drive to improve.
“The girls are working hard,"
said Cook. “Coach McCurley
and I both believe that we
can be faster offensively this
year.”
Last season the Lady Tigers
went 7-13 overall.
Some of the key players
include Brittney Beauchamp,
the 5-8 post, who is a fierce
competitor in her position
according to Cook; and Jessie
Flint, who returns after a knee
injury and will play perime
ter. Cook said that Flint has a
strong outside shot.
Another player to keep an
eye on this season is 5-10 soph
omore, Jasmine ‘Jaz' Grier.
Cook said Grier can play out
side and inside and has shown
some great developing talent.
The Lady Tigers have their
first chance of the season this
Saturday as Commerce travels
to Apalachee to face the Lady
Wildcats, who went 3-18 last
year. Tip-off is at 6:00.
Last year the Lady Wildcats
went 3-18 overall.
