The East Jackson Eagles
find themselves in the
midst of a two-game win
ing streak after picking
up a win in their first
region game of the year
against Riverside Military
Academy last Tuesday,
then moving on to defeat
Washington-Wilkes in a
home stand Friday night.
Up next for the Eagles
is a trip to Philips Arena
to face North Hall on
Dec. 23.
As of Tuesday, North
Hall was 4-2 overall, and
preparing for its first
region pairing. Tip-off on
Dec. 23 at Philips Arena
is scheduled for 2:30
p.m.
East Jackson started off
region play with a victory
on Dec. 9, but it wasn’t a
win that came easily.
Riverside came out
strongly, and led 28-23
going into the second
half. But the Eagles’
pressure started to wear
on Riverside, and East
Jackson outscored them
32-18 in the second half to take a 55-46
win.
Brandon Garrett scored 16 points,
while Kolby Gilbert had 15 and
Standrick Stephens had 13.
“Their height was giving us some
trouble (in the first half),’’ said coach
Brian Turner.
Up next was a home game against the
Washington-Wilkes Tigers. From the
start, it a back-and-forth contest. The
Eagles trailed 13-8 at the end of the
first quarter, but led 29-25 at the half.
The game remained close through the
third quarter, but in the fourth, East
Jackson stretched out a 15-point lead.
A last push by the Tigers cut that to six
points, but some late Eagle free throws
gave East Jackson some cushion, and
they came away with a 65-54 victory.
Garrett led the scoring with 23 points,
while Stephens had 15 and Gilbert 10.

JV Tigers 2-1 Since Starting Season
By Justin Poole
The Commerce Junior Varsity Tigers are
in a good spot for early in the season.
With a 2-1 record after facing Apalachee,
Jefferson and Hebron, the JV Tigers are
looking forward to their next game.
Up next for the team is Apalachee on
Saturday, Dec. 20. Commerce will host the
second match up between the schools.
The game is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Apalachee
On Nov. 22, The Commerce JV team
traveled to Apalachee and accomplished
what the varsity teams could not. The JV
Tigers won 43-36.
Commerce led the game, starting with
a 10-4 lead in the first quarter. At the
end of the half, the JV Tigers were hold
ing onto a seven-point advantage. Those
seven points were the deciding factor as
Commerce carried a 43-36 victory.
Commerce JV coach Rob Brown said
he thought the team played a very solid
game for the season opener.
Leading the JV Tigers’ charge was
Bubba Bonds scoring 24 points. Also
scoring were Tyler Gamble with five
points. Travaris Glasper, Marquese Butler
and Chase Klugh each put in four points
apiece. Tyler Adams tossed in two points
as well.
Jefferson
Against Jefferson, the JV Tigers made a
comeback in the half to take a four-point
win over the in-county rival.
Jefferson had an 11-7 lead in the first
quarter, but Commerce tied the board
15-15 by the end of the half. Jumping out
front in the third quarter, the JV Tigers
held Jefferson to 10 points for a 33-25
lead.
Jefferson made a run for it in the
final eight minutes, but Commerce stayed
strong and took a 47-43 win over the JV
Dragons.
Bonds only played the back half of the
game but was once again the lead scorer
with 19 points. Second leading scorer,
Glasper gained 12 points for the team.
“Bubba Bonds played another solid game
coming off the bench in the third quarter
to score 12 points which really helped
our momentum,’’ said Brown. “Travaris
Glasper also played well. Overall, the
team played very hard and did the little
things they had to do to win.’’
Also scoring for Commerce, Butler
picked up six points, Kentrell Williams
added five points, Klugh netted three and
Adams shot two points.
Hebron
Against Hebron in the Commerce home
opener, the JV Tigers faltered a little bit.
Brown said the boys came out flat and
could never recover. Hebron led the game
for the 32-29 win.
Commerce managed to stay within
fighting distance, but could not overtake
the Lions.
Klugh was the leading scorer for the
JV Tigers, with eight points. Glasper and
Butler each added seven points to the
effort.
Bonds made five points and Adams had
two points.
“Not scoring in the first quarter is
hard to overcome,’’ said Brown, “and we
weren’t able to. The effort was there, but
we simply weren’t able to get things going
offensively.’’
