Commerce Police Department Arrests
2 Arrested On
Battery Charges
Commerce police offi
cers arrested two men
in separate cases where
domestic issues turned
violent.
Jeffrey Milton Burrell,
36, of 116 Madison
Street, Commerce,
was charged with bat
tery under the Family
Violence Act, cruelty
to children because a
child was present at the
time, and possession of
a firearm by a convicted
felon. The firearm was
not a part of the domes
tic incident, however.
According to the inci
dent report, police were
summoned to the resi
dence when a minor
child, at the request of
her mother, called 911 in
the midst of a fight.
The report indicated
that Burrell and his
wife, a 34-year-old white
female, had been argu
ing and at one point
he forced her down
and removed the wed
ding ring from her fin
ger. The argument went
from inside the house
to the outside, and the
report indicated that
Burrell told police that
she threw a shoe at him,
hit him over the back
with a bb gun and threw
a computer at him.
At one point, the report
said, the 11-year-old
child told Burrell not to
hurt her mother. Burrell
claimed he told the child
he would not. Police
recovered the ring.
William Joseph
Harrison, 42, 1898 Oscar
Barton Road, Monroe,
was charged with crimi
nal trespass, simple
battery and disorderly
conduct after a fracas
at a W.E. King Road resi
dence.
The victim, Harrison’s
sister-in-law, said
Harrison arrived at her
house at about 2 a.m.
and demanded to be let
in so he could confront
his ex-wife, the victim’s
sister. When the woman
refused, he began kicking
the door, the report said,
so the woman promised
to let him in if he’d calm
down.
When she opened the
door, the report said,
Harrison pushed her,
causing her to cut her
arm on the door. He
picked up a few items
and left. His ex-wife,
meanwhile, had locked
herself in a bedroom out
of fear for her safety.
He was arrested at the
Scottish Inn.

7-Year-Old Ejected In Accident
A 7-year-old boy was trans
ported by Life Flight helicop
ter to Egleston Children’s
Hospital in Atlanta Friday
night after he was ejected
from a vehicle during a
wreck.
According to the Com
merce Police Department,
Jorge Sanchez Espinoza,
38, of Athens was traveling
north on U.S. 441 near its
intersection with Hwy. 334
when he turned his Dodge
Caravan left into the path
of a Ford Explorer driven
by Judy M. Price, 53, of
Gainesville, which was trav
eling south on the bypass.
The impact caused the
Caravan to overturn, and
eject Jair Sanchez, 7, from
the vehicle. He was trans
ported by Jackson EMS to
the nearby parking lot of
the old Ingles shopping cen
ter where Life Flight picked
him up for transport.
Espinoza, Mariana
Rebollar, 26, and Lisa
Sanchez, 9, all of Athens, and
all passengers in Espinoza’s
vehicle, were transported to
Athens Regional Medical
Center due to “serious” inju
ries, according to the acci
dent report. Rebollar had
to be extricated by rescue
personnel.
Espinoza was charged with
three seat-belt violations,
two of them for children
ages 6-18; failure to yield
right of way and improper
turn.
Burglar Steals Cigarettes At Cody Fuels
A masked burglar kicked
open the door of Cody
Fuels at about 2:11 a.m. last
Thursday, filled a trash can
with cigarettes, placed it in
his vehicle and came in for
more, before getting away.
According to the
Commerce Police Depart
ment incident report,
officers responded to the
Maysville Road conve
nience store’s burglar alarm
at 2 a.m. to find the front
door kicked in, the office
door beaten in and the
office ransacked.
When the owner of the
business arrived, police got
to watch the entire crime
spree. They saw the man,
dressed in coveralls and
wearing a mask and gloves,
kick in the glass front door,
enter with a large trash con
tainer, beat down the office
door with a crow bar and
exit with the container full
of cigarettes. The man re
entered, went back into the
office and emerged with two
large boxes also containing
cigarettes.
Cody Fuels wasn’t the
only Maysville Road inter
change business to suffer a
loss during the past week.
Someone managed to
steal nearly $1,400 worth
of unspecified merchandise
from a locked glass case at
the Flying J Travel Plaza.
The incident report indi
cated that police are await
ing copy of the surveillance
tapes for the area.
Also at the Flying J, some
one pre-paid for $15 worth
of gasoline, then pumped
$48.38 worth of gasoline
into a vehicle and drove
away.
Break-In Foiled
A 28-year-old Shankle
Heights woman reported
that a man, whose name she
was able to give police, tried
to jimmy the lock on her
door with what appeared
to be a credit card. The
victim was alerted to the
attempt by her barking dog
and recognized the suspect
as someone who had been
“hanging around” and who
she suspected of previ
ous attempts to enter her
house.
Auto Parts Theft
A Latino male alleged
ly walked out of O’Reilly
Auto Parts without paying
for a couple of auto parts.
According to the incident
report, the man was look
ing for parts for a Dodge
Durango. With the parts
on the counter, he told the
clerk he had to go to his
vehicle to get his wallet. The
next thing the clerk noticed
was that he’d taken the parts
and was driving off with
four other Latino males.
Dog Case
The city’s animal control
officer confiscated a female
bulldog and its six pup
pies after police were sum
moned to a Carson Street
residence.
The owners of the dog
told police they let it out
side and a neighbor took
the dog and would not
give it back. The neighbor,
who had also summoned
the police, claimed the dog
looked malnourished. The
animal control officer took
the dog and her puppies to
the veterinarian.
Vehicle Towed
Police ended up towing
a vehicle after an officer
pulled it over because the
tag decal had been cov
ered with tape. The driver,
a 16-year-old female, said
she’d borrowed the car
from a friend.
Obama No Help
During Arrest
A Nicholson woman
who thinks the election of
Barack Obama as presi
dent will end racism in
Jackson County may need
a presidential pardon.
Commerce police arrest
ed Gail Louise Brown, 51,
of 163 Tommy Barnett
Lane Dec. 9 after she alleg
edly cursed loudly and
repeatedly as police dif
fused a domestic incident
at BJC Medical Center.
Barnett was one of sev
eral family members who
went to the hospital to see
a male “under protective
care” at the facility. Staff
called the police after
family members refused
to leave.
Barnett, according to the
officer’s account, did not
go quietly. She allegedly
made repeated and loud
obscene remarks. She
also charged that “Jackson
County is redneck and
racist and Obama would
change all that once he’s
in office,” the officer said.
Barnett was charged
with disorderly conduct.
Man Too Drunk
To Go To Jail
A man charged with
driving under the influ
ence (DUI) was allegedly
so drunk the county jail
refused to accept him.
According to the inci
dent report, a Commerce
officer pulled over a
vehicle driven by Jeffery
Wayne Sharp, 53, of Route
4, Colbert, for failure to
maintain a lane.
The officer reportedly
noticed Sharp’s slurred
speech, the smell of alco
hol and that when Sharp
exited the vehicle he
could not maintain his
balance without holding
onto the vehicle.
After Sharp blew a .222
on the portable alco
hol sensor, the officer
charged him with DUI.
Sharp was taken to the
Jackson County Jail, but
jail personnel refused to
accept him “because of
the condition he was in.”
The officer had to bring
him back to the police
station and put him in a
holding cell until he was
sober enough to go to jail,
the report said.
