Jackson County To Host Dizzy Dean World Series
The Jackson County Parks
and Recreation Department
will host the Dizzy Dean
World Series.
The department will host
the 11-year-old Baseball
World Series July 16-21 at
the Lamar Murphy Park in
Jefferson. The East Jackson
recreation park in Nicholson
will serve as an additional
site for games.
There are 35 to 50 teams
expected for the event with
an estimated 1,200 visitors
from Georgia and around
the Southeast expected in
to attend.
“Our department is eager
to host this event and I
know we can count on our
business community, local
governments and citizens
for their support," said Rick
Sanders, recreation director.
Jackson County’s rela
tionship with Dizzy Dean
baseball first began in 2002
when a pilot program was
held for 7-8-year olds. After
this, the recreation advisory
committee decided to fully
align its baseball program
with Dizzy Dean baseball
for ages 6-12 for the 2003
season. After this season,
the department’s softball
and older baseball programs
were fully integrated with the
Dizzy Dean organization.
Since 2004, Jackson
County Parks and Recreation
has been a leader within
Dizzy Dean at the district
and state levels. The depart
ment has hosted 15 district
tournaments and four state
tournaments in various age
groups. Jackson County
Parks and Recreation teams
have also won numerous dis
trict titles, three state titles
and the 2007 10 and under

Local Racers Have Rough Outing At Snowball
By Brandon Reed
It was a rough weekend
for local racers who made
the trek to Pensacola, Fla. to
compete in the 41st annual
Snowball Derby weekend
at Five Flags Speedway.
In the Snowball Derby,
Pendergrass’ Paul Kelley
was the highest finisher
from our area. Kelley start
ed 22nd, and finished 10th
after being involved in a
multi-car accident on lap
263 of the 300 lap race.
Jefferson’s Joey Senter
finished 23rd, several laps
down after being involved
in a two car accident 22
laps into the event.
Former Jefferson resi
dent Ryan Crane came into
the event with high hopes,
but had problems during
the race. His woes started
with a spin on lap 15 after
he tangled with the car of
Shane Sieg while racing for
fifth. Crane was able to
continue, but was involved
in another accident on lap
72, along with Michigan
racer Tim Curry. Crane
was left with heavy damage
to the right front of his car,
and was eliminated from
the event. He was credited
with a 37th place finish.
North Carolina racer
Brian Ickler was flagged the
winner of the prestigious
event, but was disqualified
in post-race tech for having
an illegally placed electric
brake blower. That gave
the win to Alabama’s Augie
Grill, his second Snowball
Derby victory of his career.
It also made Grill the sec
ond driver in history to win
back-to-back events.
Things went a little better
for local racers who took
part in the Snowflake 100
Pro Late Model event at
Five Flags. Ryan Crane,
who won the event in 2007,
held the lead with five laps
remaining when Brandon
Carlson made a late pass
for the win. Crane would
hold on for a second place
finish.
Paul Kelley placed fourth
after coming back from a
mid-race spin.
Hoschton’s Jimmy
Garmon finished 22nd
after being caught up in a
seven car accident on lap
54.
SATTERFIELD
Commerce driver Taylor
Satterfield had a rough
night from the start after
being caught up in a ten-
car pile-up on the third
lap. Satterfield retuned to
the track, but would com
plete only 22 laps. He was
credited with a 33rd place
finish.
On behalf of the children
in our schools, the
Commerce City Schools
faculty and staff would
like to express our
deepest appreciation for
the contributions from
businesses, parents,
churches, and other
community organizations
this Christmas.
Many of the children in
our system will have a
happier Christmas thanks
to your generosity.
We appreciate your
tremendous support.
