Jay’s Department Store on
South Broad Street, would
agree.
“It was fantastic," he said.
“We’ve never had that many
people in the store after
hours in the history of Jay’s.
There were tons of people. I
hope we build on it."
Minish, who said busi
ness was steady from about
6:15 to 8:45, admitted being
somewhat surprised.
“I really didn’t think we’d
have that big a response," he
said. “It was fantastic."
The concept was not new
with Commerce. Some
DDA members visited a
similar event in Washington
and another in Gainesville.
Among them was Claudine
Smith of Our Town Antiques,
South Elm Street.
“I think it was a success,"
she said. “We had a big turn
out and a lot of positive
comments. Everybody had
a good time."
Smith noted the participa
tion by non-retail businesses
like Emergency Billing, Chris’
Place and Carol Streetman
Photographic Design and
Shubert & Company, CPA
that helped make the event
more festive.
As for her store, Smith
said “we had a good night."
All on-street parking was
full, and Craver noted that
downtown restaurants were
busier than usual during the
extended hours.

Airport Plans To
Reopen Closed Runway
By William Butler
The Jackson County
Airport Authority voted last
week to double the project
ed cost of a nine-acre land
acquisition in fiscal year
2011, as well as make repairs
and reopen runway 09-27
in fiscal year 2010. This was
part of the five-year capital
improvement program for
the airport called “... the
most aggressive in Georgia"
by Airport Manager Bob
Stapleton.
The crosswinds runway
has been closed since for
mer assistant county man
ager Andy Newton closed it
without notice.
Also addressed at the
meeting was an intergov
ernmental lease agreement
between Jackson County
and the airport author
ity. Pending approval by
the board of commission
ers, this agreement would
streamline the administra
tion of hangar leases at the
airport.
In his report to the author
ity, Stapleton said aviation
fuel sales at the airport
are up 2,000 gallons from
November 2007 to a level of
9,240 gallons. Along with the
increase in fuel, the airport
has secured a new fuel truck
free of charge through the
Surplus Property Program.
Stapleton also stated in his
report that the airport termi
nal operations will be mov
ing into a recently vacated
hangar office space.
