Frances Veal Austin, 68, of
Commerce, died Monday,
Dec. 22, 2008.
Born in Banks County,
she was the daughter of the
late Newt and Lucille Jacks
Veal. She was a member of
Rogers Baptist Church and
was retired from the textile
industry. She was a loving
and caring wife, mother
and grandmother, loved
ones stated.
Survivors include her hus
band, Robert Lee Austin;
sons and daughter-in-law,
David “Buck” and Angie
Garrett, and Robert Lee
Austin Jr., all of Commerce;
daughter and son-in-law,
Deb and Terry Berryman,
Braselton; sister and brother-
in-law, Mildred and Wallace
Smith, North Carolina;
granddaughter, Tiffany
Bowen; great-grandsons,
Trey Garrett and Bryce
Bowen, both of Commerce;
and several nephews and
nieces.
Funeral services were
held Wednesday, Dec. 24,
in the chapel of Little-Ward
Funeral Home with the
Revs. Carlton Peters, Jessie
Mealor and Tommy Seay
officiating. Burial was in the
Rogers Baptist Church cem
etery.

Myrtie Lee Phillips
Brock, 87, of Bowman,
died Thursday, Dec. 25,
2008, at Brown Memorial
Convalescent Center in
Royston.
Born in Banks County Oct.
19,1921, she was the daugh
ter of the late Talmadge Joe
and Tempie Mae Hembree
Phillips.
Mrs. Brock was the
mother of Lynda Brown,
Commerce; and sister of
Okie Phillips, Commerce.
Funeral services were
held Saturday, Dec. 27, in
the chapel of Pruitt Funeral
Home with the Rev. Johnny
Stowe officiating.

Leon Garrett
Leon Garrett, 40, of
Commerce, died suddenly
Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at
his residence.
Born in Habersham
County, he was the son
of Betty Frady Garrett of
Commerce and the late
Charles Edward Garrett.
He was also preceded in
death by a brother, Roger
Edward Garrett.
Survivors in addition
to his mother, include a
son, Joseph Lee Garrett,
Commerce; brother, Edward
Garrett, Commerce; sisters,
Linda Cowart, Nicholson,
and Mary Gary, Maysville;
one nephew; and six niec
es.
Funeral services were
held Monday, Dec. 29, in
the chapel of Ivie Funeral
Home, after which the body
will be cremated.
Ivie Funeral Home,
Commerce, was in charge
of arrangements.

Wanda Anthony Giddens,
51, of Madison County, died
Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, at her
residence due to a sudden
illness.
She was the daughter of
Ruth Bagwell Anthony and
the late Roger Anthony.
Mrs. Giddens was the sis
ter of Vaughn Howington
Sr., Jimmy Anthony and
Frances Barrett, all of
Commerce, and Julie
Cooper, Maysville.
Funeral arrangements will
be announced at a later
date.

Sue “NeNaw” McKinney
Milam, 65, of Maysville,
died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008.
Born Jan. 14, 1943, in
Franklin, TN, she was the
daughter of the late Carl and
Willie Mae Tate McKinney.
Mrs. Milam was preceded in
death by her husband, Jerry
Lee Milam; son, Chadwick
Heath Milam; grandson,
Dusten Weaver; and a broth
er, Clayton McKinney.
Survivors include daugh
ters and son-in-law, Connie
Weaver, Trina Milam and
David Parks; son, Scott
Milam; sisters, Jan Goforth
and Kaye McKinney; sister-
in-law, Jewell McKinney;
grandchildren, Jeffrey Clay
Milam, Austen Weaver,
Chelsea Burdett, Amber
Milam, Dalton Milam and
Brittany Dockery.

Tuesday, Dec. 23, in the cha
pel of Olin L. Gammage and
Sons Funeral Home with the
Rev. Bobby Wood officiating.
Burial was in Youngs Grove
Cemetery. Pallbearers were

Billy Nix
Billy Nix, 73, of
Pendergrass, died Friday,
Dec. 26, 2008.
A native of West Virginia,
he was the son of the late
Ola Lance and Bill Nix. He
was retired from the poultry
industry and was a mem
ber of Pond Fork Baptist
Church
Mr. Nix was the father
of Patricia Parson of
Commerce.
Funeral services were held
Sunday, Dec. 28, in the Pond
Fork Baptist Church with
the Revs. Johnny Knight
and M.A. Poole officiating.

Dillard Pruitt
Dillard James Pruitt, 73, of
Demorest, died Wednesday,
Dec. 24, 2008, following an
extended illness.
Born in Franklin County
April 12, 1935, he was the
son of the late Ralph and
Janey Ruth Means Pruitt.
Mr. Pruitt was the broth
er of Wallace Pruitt of
Commerce.
Funeral services were
held Friday, Dec. 26, at
Whitfield Funeral Home
with the Rev. Duane Eller
officiating. Burial was in the
Nails Creek Baptist Church
cemetery.

Otis Clyde Westmoreland,
89, of Maysville, died
Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008,
at Hill Haven Nursing
Home, following an extend
ed illness.
He was the son of the
late Edmund Clyde and
Ida Black Westmoreland
and was preceded in death
by his wife, Aldah Wilson
Westmoreland.
Survivors include a
daughter, Marianne Wilson,
Greenville, SC; grandchil
dren, David Keith Wilson
and Amanda Lauren
Wilson; and a great-grand
son, Nicholas Wilson.
Funeral services were
held Saturday, Dec. 27, at
Ivie Funeral Home with the
Rev. Gary Thompson offici
ating. Burial was in the Grey
Hill Cemetery.
