library's 'Book Vine' Comes Of Age
The Book Vine, the
Commerce Public Library’s
book discussion group,
is livelier than ever as it
embarks on its eighth year,
and is inviting newcomers
and visitors to come and
enjoy “literature, laughter,
lively discussions and des
sert" when the group meets
Friday, Jan. 16, at 1:30 p.m.
The reading selection
for January is “Letters of a
Portuguese Nun," by Miriam
Cyr, and the controversy
begins with the question
of whether a nun actual
ly penned the five impas
sioned love letters that com
prise the book.
Actress and author Miriam
Cyr did extensive research
to document the theory
that Mariana Alcoforado,
a Franciscan nun and the
daughter of a prominent
Portuguese family, wrote
the letters — and that their
recipient was a dashing
French officer, the Marquis

What’s certain is that the
book’s powerful impact
does not diminish with the
centuries. It stirred such
a sensation when it was
first published, in 1669,
that in France the word
“Portuguese" came to mean
“a passionate love letter."
Now, three and a half cen
turies later, it is still being
discussed, and its origins
debated, while its detailed
depiction of 17th-century
Portuguese life is appreci
ated more than ever. Simon
Schama chose “Letters of a
Portuguese Nun" as one of
his two book selections for
The Guardian in London,
calling it “the loveliest and,
in its way, deepest history
for a long, long time."
New Books
With support from private
donors, plus some state and
local funding, the library
has seen no reduction in
the number of new titles hit
ting its shelves, “and we are
thrilled that this is the case,"
says library director Susan
Harper.
