Tigers Remain 2
By Justin Poole
The Commerce Tigers dropped both
of last week’s games to Social Circle
and to Lakeview.
This week the Tigers traveled to
Athens Academy on Tuesday to start
the brunt of region competition. Results
from Tuesday were unavailable at press
time.
This weekend, Commerce faces two
additional region opponents. On Friday
the Tigers host Prince Avenue at 8:30
p.m. following the Lady Tigers’ game.
On Saturday Jan. 17, Commerce trav
els to face Athens Christian at 6:30
p.m.
Last Tuesday, Commerce returned
from holiday break by hosting Social
Circle, which defeated the Tigers 52-43.
Bridges said that the Social Circle
team played very aggressively and
Commerce suffered from a bad night
with a lot of mental mistakes.
“I don’t know if we got intimidated,
tired, or what, but we didn’t play very
hard and it showed,” said Bridges.
The Tigers took a tentative two-point
lead after the first quarter, 6-4, but
Social Circle roared back in the second
eight minutes to jump ahead 23-12 at
the half.
According to Bridges, the Tigers made
a run in the second half, drawing within
one point in the third quarter, but Social

Circle once again pulled ahead leaving
Commerce trailing 36-25.
“I am hoping we can chalk this up as a
bad night we won’t see again,” Bridges
said.
Bubba Bonds led Commerce’s offense,
scoring 12 points. Cameron Billings
picked up eight points, followed by T.
Green with seven. Torrance Wilcher
added six, Brandon Romans four, and
Tyler Gamble and Anthony Norris each
picked up three points.
Commerce faced Lakeview on Friday
in a hard fought contest. The Tigers
had trouble shooting the ball and were
defeated 75-62.
“I think we did a good job of wiping
the slate clean after Social Circle,” said
Bridges, “I really thought we competed
and played hard against Lakeview dur
ing the whole game.”
Nonetheless, Lakeview went ahead
early on leading 17-8 after one period.
In the second quarter, Commerce cut
the Lakeview lead down then tied the
score, but Lakeview retook the lead
staying two to four points ahead of
the Tigers, until Commerce was able to
overtake and end the half up 28-26.
With a slim two-point lead, Commerce
came out and played hard in the second
half according to Bridges, but Lakeview
pulled out 52-41 to end the third quarter.
The game boiled down to missed oppor
tunities, and the Tigers couldn’t make
the shots when they needed them and
Lakeview coasted to a 13-point win.
Wilcher lead the Tigers with 17 points.

JV Tigers Pick Up Two Wins, Prepare To Host Prince Avenue
By Justin Poole
The Commerce Junior
Varsity Tigers hosted
Lakeview Academy on
Jan. 9 and defeated the
visiting Lions while their
varsity counterparts could
not claim the same feat.
This week the JV Tigers
host Prince Avenue on
Friday at 5:15 p.m.
Before the holiday break
Commerce dropped a
game to Apalachee.
The Dec. 20 game at
Apalachee had the JV
team in the hole early on.
The Tigers fought back to
within one point before
falling 46-36.
Apalachee started
strong going, up 14-7 at
the end of the first quar
ter. Commerce cut the
lead to three points by the
half 26-23, then closed
to 35-24 after three peri
ods. Apalachee’s defense
clamped down in the
final quarter and took the
10-point win.
Chase Klugh led the JV
Tigers with 14 points, all
of them coming in the
second quarter. Brandon
Romans picked up 10,
followed by Travaris
Glasper with four, Kentrell
Williams and Tyler
Adams with three apiece
and Marquese Butler with
two.
Returning from the holi
days, Commerce hosted
Social Circle on Jan. 6.
Snatching a one-point
win, Commerce improved
its record at 3-2.
Social Circle had the
early advantage, outscor-
ing Commerce 11-4 in the
first quarter. Social Circle
remained in control until
the final quarter when
Commerce took control
late in the game.
“This was a great game
for us to win because our
last three games have all
come down to the final
seconds with us coming
out on the short end in
the previous two. So, to
get a win in a tight game
was good,” said coach
Rob Brown.
Social Circle tried a late
push going ahead by one
with only seconds left on
the clock. At three sec
onds, Commerce had the
ball out under the basket;
Glasper in-bounded the
ball to Tyler Adams for
the buzzer-beating shot
for the win.
Leading scorer Romans
poured in 14 points.
Adams contributed
seven points followed
by Klugh with five and
Josh Swistak with four.
Glasper, Williams and
Butler each picked up
two, with Colton Davis
adding one point.
The 53-42 win over
Lakeview improved the
JV Tigers’ record 4-2.
Once again it came down
to the final eight minutes
before Commerce made
its move after Lakeview
controlled the game for
the first three quarters.
According to Brown, the
Lakeview game was the
most solid game the JV
Tigers have played of the
season.
“We did a very good job
of handling Lakeview’s
pressure,” said Brown.
“We took care of the ball
