Councilman Massey
Recovering From Stroke
Commerce City Council
man Richard Massey is
recovering at Northeast
Georgia Medical Center
from a stroke suffered Jan.
10.
Massey 74, represents
Ward 5.
He’d undergone carotid
artery surgery apparently
successfully Dec. 29, and
went back to the hospital
Jan. 8 to have the stitches
removed, at which time
doctors discovered “a little
infection,” his son, Rick
Massey, explained.
“By the time they got home
from the doctor’s office,
he was in a lot of pain, so
we called 911 and brought
him back to
Gainesville,”
the younger
Massey
said.
The doc
tors attempt
ed to clean
out the Masse y
infection, but the stitches,
weakened by the infection,
“blew,” according to Rick
Massey, leading to further
surgery that was completed
after midnight.
“Sometime, between 2 a.m.
an 8 a.m. on Saturday he
had a stroke,” Rick Massey
explained. He added that
his father has continued to
improve slowly since.
Maysville Sign On To
911 Emergency Plan
At a called meeting last
Thursday, the Maysville City
Council adopted a resolu
tion for a Jackson County
911 Local Emergency
Operation Plan.
The plan will provide prep
aration for carrying out all
emergency functions other
than functions in which the
military are responsible.
The council also discussed
several other items but took
no action, including:
• limiting yard sales held
within city limits to last

down and reducing truck
traffic in the downtown and
to help in its drug interdic
tion efforts.
“After much discussion
and opposition, that idea
is dropped for now,” the
mayor said.
Later, Hardy said the mat
ter more or less died for
lack of support.
“Just talking among our
selves, really,” he said.
“Clarence (Bryant, city man-
no longer than 72 hours,
allowing city residents to
have no more than two
yard sales per month and
requiring that yard sale
items are to be put back
inside at night until the
next day.

the sale of or serving of alco
hol by businesses, including
catering services at out-of-
town events and customers
to bring their own alcohol
into restaurants if the owner
permits it.

ager) didn’t hear anything
positive. We didn’t either.
It sounded like the start of
something that would cause
a lot of problems.”
And cause a lot of opposi
tion.
“There are a lot of truck
drivers in the area,” the
mayor noted. “We heard
from a lot of them. It was
just one of those things that
didn’t appeal to many folks.
There certainly wasn’t any
uproar wanting us to do it.”

general surgeon,” one of
the key vacant staff posi
tions; and is considering
the creation of an acute/
urgent care clinic to pro
vide an alternative to the
emergency room for non
emergency care.
At Monday’s meeting,
the board voted to give
its finance and credentials
committees the author
ity to act if the company’s
prospect for the general
surgeon accepts the job.
Officials have asked for
historical data on surger
ies, numbers on out-migra
tion of patients to other
hospitals and toured the
available offices.
“I think this holds a lot of
promise,” said Blair.
In other business, the
board voted to renew
$1.5 million in loans with
Freedom Bank and First
Commerce Bank and to
acquire a $500,000 line of
credit with Community
Bank and Trust.
The medical center is
making interest only pay
ments on the existing lines
of credit, Yarborough said.
According to a news
release, last year BJC
Medical Center provided
more than $1.3 million in
charity care and had bad
debts of more than $5 mil
lion — and the trends are
worsening.
