Birth Announcement
Owen Scott Neely
Brian and Carrie Neely of Flowery Branch announce
the birth of a son, Owen Scott Neely Wednesday Dec.
17, 2008, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Athens. He weighed six
pounds, 11 ounces and was 19 1/4 inches long.
Grandparents are Rick and Marita Neely, Nicholson; and
Bob and Jo Ann Cummings, Commerce. The great-grand
parents are Carolyn Goolsby, Commerce; Rudi and Hilde
Ventzke, California; and Floyd Neely, Indiana.
Life South Blood Drive Is Jan. 22
LifeSouth will hold a blood drive Thursday, Jan. 22, from
2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the parking lot of the Commerce Lanier
Tech campus, 631 South Elm Street.
Each donor will receive a LifeSouth T-shirt and reusable
grocery bag, a complimentary cholesterol screening and
blood typing, and 12 months coverage in the LifeSouth
Blood Donor Benefit Program.

Reception To Honor Susan Harper
The Friends of the Commerce Public Library will hold a
reception Sunday, March 1, in honor of Library Director
Susan Harper, whose retirement begins that day.
The event will be from 2:00 to 4:00 at the library, accord
ing to Erica Jantzen, president.
Harper retires Saturday, Feb. 28. She has been director of
the library since 1995.

City Of Commerce
The City of Commerce will hold a General
Election on Tuesday, November 3, 2009. The
offices to be filled for election are Mayor Pro Tem,
Councilman Ward I and Councilman Ward II. The
qualifying fee for the Mayor Pro Tem positions will
be $90.00 and the fee for the Council positions will
be $81.00.
The School Board Districts to be filled for
election are District I and District II. The qualifying
fee for the elected districts will be $72.00.
The last day a person may register and be
eligible to vote in the General Election will be
October 5, 2009.
Elberton Group To Bring Comedy To
Commerce Cultural Center Feb. 20-21
Savannah River
Productions Inc., Elberton,
will present the comedy,
“The Service At Rocky
Bluff,’’ Friday and Saturday,
Feb. 20-21, at the Commerce
Cultural Center.
The play, written by Scott
Icenhower, features an up-
and-coming country music
band in town to play at the
state fair in its lead singer’s
hometown. The singer drops
by to see her church, which
is fearful that a visiting pas
tor search committee will
steal its beloved pastor.
“It’s a really funny sto
ryline,’’ promises Andrea
Bradford, who also happens
to have the lead role. “It
is a musical play, featuring
gospel music and it has a
country music band
The play is new, but
Bradford said it sold out
in Greensboro, NC, which
plans to bring it back.
The group plans to per
form four shows this sea
son, and hopes to bring
all of them to Commerce,
Bradford said.
Tickets are $17 for adults,
$ 15 for seniors and students
and $12 apiece for groups
of eight or more.

The group will also perform
the play at the First Presbyterian
Church of Elberton Feb. 6-7
and the Hartwell Fine Arts

Women's Health Fair
Set At Commerce Clinic
The Jackson County
Health Department will
host a women’s health fair
from 8 a.m. to noon Friday,
Jan. 30, at the Commerce
Clinic, 623 S. Elm Street.
Free health screenings will
be offered for lower-income
women 50 and over and
uninsured.
The screenings include
blood pressure, blood
tests for diabetes and high
cholesterol, Pap smears,
breast exams and mammo
grams. Mammograms will
be performed at the health
department by the Mobile
Mammography Unit of
Athens Regional Medical
Center.
A health educator from the
Northeast Georgia Health
District will be on hand
to discuss blood pressure
results and talk to women
about the high blood pres
sure/ diabetes treatment
program offered by the
health department.

Relay Kickoff Is Thursday
The 2009 Jackson County Relay for Fife campaign will
kick off Thursday Jan. 22, with a program at the Jefferson
Civic Center. The theme is “Hometown USA: Hope Starts
Here.’’
Refreshments will be served at 5:30 p.m., with a program
to follow. Jim Joiner and Priscilla Daves, the honorary chair
men, will speak, and there will be a slide show from last
year’s relay, said Sandra Fite, relay committee member.
“We would love for anybody to come who might have an
interest in the relay, even if they don’t have a team,’’ Fite
said.
This year’s relay goal is to raise $245,000, to have 250 sur
vivors involved and to have at least 55 teams participating.
