— Surviving 'Survivor's' Open Casting Call
Cont. from Page 4A
ducers was watching me
and making note of my
inability to wait in line
in 38-degree weather.
At 4:00 I walked back to
the waiting area and met
up with some of my new
friends. The father-son
pair and I spent the next
hour and a half talking
about what we should
say for our video. As we
were doing this, people
were exiting the build
ing looking extremely
relieved since they had
just finished their video
interviews and all of
them were trying to bum
cigarettes from people.
A-190 was called at
5:25.1 was so nervous
when I actually saw the
camera and the staff of
"Survivor." While wait
ing your turn, you are
watching other hopefuls
give their 2 1/2-minute
video talk on why they
are the ultimate Survivor.
When it was my turn,
you can imagine the but
terflies and anxiety that
built up knowing that all
these people were watch
ing. I really have no idea
what I said; I think I was
a babbling idiot. When
my time was up, I let
out a big "Waa-hoo" and
twirled the microphone.
In doing so, the micro
phone broke off the cord
and went flying across
the room, probably along
with my chances of mak
ing the cut.
That might explain why
I haven't received my call
to be one of the 800 who
make it for the face-to-
face interviews. But, I was
one of 614 who endured
the cold January weather
for over five hours to give
a 2 1/2-minute pep talk
about why they should
choose me.
The experience was a
lot more fun than just
submitting a video in the
mail. And even though I
will never make it on the
show, I have a T-shirt to
prove I survived the open
casting call of "Survivor."

SJ Residents Oppose Industrial Park
By Angela Gary
Plans for an industrial
development in South
Jackson were withdrawn
late last year but area resi
dents are still concerned
about what is planned for
the 701-acre tract.
More than 50 people
attended a town hall meet
ing in Nicholson Thursday
night held by Jackson
County Commissioner
Dwain Smith, and the
majority spoke out against
any industrial development
on the property.
Forestar Real Estate
Group had asked for a zon
ing change that would lead
to the development of a 701-
acre industrial park along
Hwy. 129, starting 1.3 miles
north of the Athens-Clarke
County line at Mary Collier
Road. The forested tract is
across from South Jackson
Elementary School. The
plans were withdrawn late
in 2008.
Chuck Murphy, a mem
ber of “Protect Jackson,” a
group opposed to indus
trial development on the
South Jackson site, asked
Smith his opinion on the
project.
“I’m against the 701 plan,”
he said. “... As far as giving
a blank check for industrial
development, I’m against
it ... Right now, I wouldn’t
vote for it.”
Smith added that he
would like to see the coun
ty’s industrial tax base
increase.
County manager Darrell
Hampton added: “The
board of commissioners
has not had a presenta
tion (on the South Jackson
property). It has not been
brought to the county com
missioners for a vote.”
Smith added: “Rezoning is
the toughest part of a com
missioner’s job ... My deci
sions are based on what is
best for the county.”
The tract is zoned A-2
with a “rural places” land
use designation. If a subdi
vision located on the prop
erty, the guidelines would
allow a maximum of 467
houses, although county
officials said the final num
ber would likely be less
than that.
Other topics discussed at
the almost two-hour hearing
Thursday night included a
planned county reservoir,
the new East Jackson recre
ation park and state cuts to
the homestead exemption
tax credit.
Tim Venable, Nicholson,
asked about the three sites
being considered by the
county for a future reser
voir. His Nicholson home
is located in one of the
proposed sites. Smith said
no final decision has been
made on a reservoir site.
