Bernard Balthazor
COMMERCE Bernard
Glen Balthazor, 82, died Friday,
February 13, 2009, at St. Mary’s
Flospice House in Athens.
Born in Momence, Ill., he
was the son of late Fred and
Flossie Balthazor. He was a
lifelong member of the United
Methodist Church in Momence,
Ill., Commerce, and finally
in Athens. Mr. Balthazor was
the plant manager at Baker
and Taylor. When he retired,
he worked for the University
of Georgia Extension Service
and owned his own business. He
loved to hunt and garden, but
most of all, he loved his family,
loved ones stated.
Survivors include his wife,
Beverly; sister and brother-in-
law, Priscilla and Earnest Lesch;
children, Susan and Marvin
Mason, Jack and Frances
Balthazor, and Ron and Jane
(Hudson) Balthazor; grand
children, Thomas and Aimee
Ballentine, Scott and Andrea
Mason, Christopher and Angelia
Balthazor, Katherine Hudson,
Daniel Balthazor, and Cara
Mason; and great-grandchildren,
Robert Ballentine, Nicholas
Ballentine, Jonathan Ballentine,
and Myles Balthazor.
The family will receive friends
at the funeral home on Thursday,
February 19, at 5 p.m. A memo
rial service will follow at 7 p.m.

Barnette, 84, died Wednesday,
February 11, 2009.
Born on September 23, 1924,
in Madison County, he was the
son of the late
Janies Clifford
"Cliff’ and Ola
Hart Barnette,
and stepmother,
Addie Powell Barnette. He lived
in Madison and Clarke coun
ties most of his life and was a
veteran, having served in the
United States Navy during World
War II. He was a member of the
Athens American Legion Post
20, and during his younger years,
he was an active member of
Colbert Baptist Church, where
he served as a Sunday School
Superintendent and deacon. Mr.
Barnette was preceded in death
by a sister and brother-in-law,
Lorraine and Grady Cheek;
stepbrother, Curtis Powell; and
stepbrother-in-law, Fred Carter.
Survivors include his lov
ing wife of 60 years, Sarah
Porterfield Barnette, Bogart;
daughter and son-in-law, Cindy
and Ken Kelly, Lyman, S.C.; son
and daughter-in-law, John and
Candi Barnette, Watkinsville;
grandchildren and spouses. Matt
and Stephanie Ring, Jason and
Laurie Beth Ring, Cliff and
Brittanie Barnette; sister, Ann
Threlkeld; and brother-in-law,

chapel of Bridges Funeral Home

was in the Colbert Cemetery in

Barnish, 86, died Wednesday,
February 11, 2009.
Born in
Scanlon Hill,
Pa., he was the
son of the late
Joannes and
Marianna Czajka Barnish. He
was retired from the military,
having served in the United
States Army and the Navy, serv
ing in World War II and Korea.
Mr. Barnish was a Mason and
a member of Rockwell Lodge,
retired as regional manager of
Globemaster, and was a mem
ber of the Hoschton United
Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife,
Ruth Castleberry Barnish,
Hoschton; daughters and sons-in-
laws. Nan and Franklin Barton,
Bogart, and Peggy and David
Newman, Wayne, Pa.; grand
children, Elizabeth and Beverly

Born in Barrow County, he
was the son of the late Boss and
Maggie Aikins Bradshaw. He
was a member of Pleasant Hill

retired cotton farmer.

Buck Bruce
LULA - Buck Bruce, 43, died
Monday, February 16, 2009,
at Northeast Georgia Medical
Center in Gainesville.
Born in Hall County on
September 21, 1965, he was the
son of Susie Armour Bruce of
Lula and the late Jimmy Bruce.
He was a car dealer for 25 plus
years and was a member of Lula
Worship Center. Two of his
favorite hobbies were riding his
Harley Davidson and spending
time with his family, especial
ly his three grandchildren. Mr.
Bruce was preceded in death by
his wife, Gail Robinson Bruce.
Survivors in addition to his
mother, include a daughter and
son-in-law, Kayla and Josh Lee,
Lula; sister and brother-in-law.
Opal and Randy Gilleland, Lula;
brother, Darren Bruce, Lula;
grandchildren, Dylan Lee, Cody
Lee and Landen Lee; two neph

Blanche Bennett Buffington,
79, died Monday, February 16,
2009, at The Oaks of Limestone,
following an extended illness.
Born on May 2, 1929, in Hall
County, she was the daughter
of the late John and Myrtle
Beatty Bennett. She was retired
from Lanier Park Hospital and
was a member of the South
Bend Methodist Church. Mrs.
Buffington was preceded in
death by her husband, the Rev.
Joe “Hamp" Buffington; and a
son, Richard "Rip” Buffington.
Survivors include a daugh
ter, Shirley Buffington Reed,
Gainesville; son and daughter-
in-law, Brian “Buff" and Lisa
Buffington, Gainesville; daugh-
ter-in-law, Judy Buffington,

Born in Sanford, Fla., she was
the daughter of the late William
I. and Blanche S. Stringer. She
was a homemaker and was pre
ceded in death by her husband,
Duane A. Carlson; and a brother,
Billy Stringer.

Faye Caudell
TOCCOA - Faye Ragsdale
Caudell, 85, died Sunday,
February 15, 2009, at the Clary
Center.
Born on May 6, 1923, in Banks
County, she was the daughter
of the late Oscar and Bertha
Kesler Ragsdale. She lived most
of her life in Stephens County.
She was a graduate of Franklin
County High School and was
Miss Franklin County in 1940.
She attended Athens Business
College and was employed with
the Toccoa Record. She and
her husband were partners in
Caudell’s Hardware and Farm
Supply for 40 years, and were
later involved with Caudell
Realty. She was a member of
the Toccoa First Baptist Church
and the Fidelis Sunday School
Class. Mrs. Caudell was preced
ed in death by brothers, Palmour,
Charles and J.B. Ragsdale.
Survivors include her hus
band of 65 years, Roger Caudell,
Toccoa; son and daughter-in-
law, Elliott and Reba Caudell,
Toccoa; grandchildren, Laura
Caudell, Wes and Jordan
Caudell, all of Birmingham,
Ala., Stephen Caudell, Toccoa;
sister, Sara Mize, Augusta; sis-
ters-in-law, Mary Ragsdale and
Lou Ragsdale, both of Toccoa;
aunt, Laveme Kesler Addison,
Elberton; and several nieces and
nephews.

Habersham County, he was the

and Mildred Dixon Strait. He
was a member of the Union
Grove Congregational Holiness
Church and a member of
RSES (Refrigeration Engineer
Society). He was founder of
Dixon-McCollum Heating and
Air. Mr. Dixon was preceded in
death by brothers, Haven Dixon
and Allen Dixon.
Survivors include his wife,
Annie Merck Dixon, Clarkesville;
daughter and son-in-law,
Leanne and Scott Andrews,

Thomas Moore
COLBERT - Thomas Elvin
Moore, 60, died Thursday,
February 12, 2009.
A native of Clarke County, he
was the son of Olious "Buddy”
and the late Mary
Ibra Cannon
Moore. He was
self employed
and was a United
States Army Veteran of Vietnam.
Survivors in addition to his
father, include his wife, Pansy
Dudley Moore; stepchildren,
Mark Cowart, Crystal Roberts,
Marie Cowart and Amanda
Cowart; brother, Marion Moore;
sisters, Diane Slaton, Jane
McCurley; grandchildren, Katie,
Shyenne, Levi, Hunter, Matthew,
Colton, Andrew and Shandi.
Funeral services were held
Monday, February 16, at
Community Baptist Church with
the Rev. Kent Barrett officiating.
Burial was in the Danielsville
Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers
were Travis Moore, Chad Moore,
Scott Slaton, Bobby Harris,
Michael Gay, Alan Slaton, Derek
Shelton, and Michael Moore.
Brown Funeral Home,
Danielsville, was in charge of
arrangements.

Dr. Andrew Muse
ATHENS - Dr. Andrew
Delone Muse Jr., 74, died
Wednesday, February 11, 2009.
Born in Carroll County, he
was the son
of the late
Andrew
Delone Sr.
and Era
Gable Muse.
He received
his Bachelor
of Science
degree
from the
University
of Georgia,
and his medical doctorate degree
from the Medical College of
Georgia. His internship was
through Athens General Hospital,
and he began with a private
practice of family medicine in
Jefferson. In 1966 he returned
to school at Emory University,
where he completed a residency
in general surgery.
He served on the faculty at
Emory front 1970-72. In July
1972 he joined practice with Dr.
Jack McDonald at the Surgery
Clinic where he retired at the
end of January, 2005. His staff
appointments included Athens
Regional Medical Center and St.
Mary's Hospital, both of which
he served several terms as Chief
of Surgery and BJC Hospital in
Commerce.
Dr. Muse served in the Georgia
Army National Guard from 1966,
and retired as Brigadier General
in 2002. He was active as a fel
low in the American College of
Surgeons and the Southeastern
Surgical Congress and a mem
ber of the American Medical
Association, American Society of
Abdominal Surgeons, American
Society of General Surgeons,
American Society of Military
