Reception To Honor Retiring Library Director
The Commerce Public
Library’s board and staff
will bid farewell to the
library’s director of 13 years
this Sunday afternoon with
a reception and open house
from 2 to 4 p.m., to which
the public is invited.
Susan Harper, who will
retire atthe end of the month,
joined the library staff as
director in 1995, when she
moved to Commerce from
San Francisco, and has seen
many changes in the library
in the intervening years.
She cites the advent of
computers as one signifi
cant change.
“The most high-tech piece
of equipment we had in
1995 was an electric type
writer,’’ she recalls. “Now
we have computers for the
public, computers for the
staff — even the card cata
log is on computers.’’ She
adds that access to informa
tion went from local and
limited to international and
unlimited “almost overnight,
it seemed.”
