turnout we’ve ever had for
a bid opening,” comment
ed Rod Nix, the project
manager for Charles Black
Construction.
According to McCoy, only
four of the 32 parts of the
job that were bid came in
over the projected budget.
“Charles Black kept say
ing, this is the right time, this
is the right time,” McCoy
commented.
What the under-budget
total means is that the sys
tem will have the money left
over to better equip the new
school.
“We feel like well be able
to equip the school with
everything we wanted to,”
McCoy said. “Well have
new furniture instead of
old. It’s exciting.”
The system expects to
sign a contract with Charles
Black — possibly by its
March 8 meeting, but if not,
in a called meeting — set
ting a total maximum price
for the school. It could
take another 45 days for
the companies to get their
bonds in order and to get
the necessary city permits
before work will begin. It
will also give the school
time to relocate the bleach
ers and largest scoreboard
from the CHS gym to the
new auxiliary gym.
Construction of the new
school will not start until
school ends this spring, but

Upon completion of the

be retained. One, possibly
two, will house the system
administrative offices; the
remainder could be put

their neighborhoods,
remove litter and get to
know each other.
Monday night will also
see action on the proposed
“ordinance to control ani
mal pests.” If enacted — and
no one expressed any oppo
sition at the work session
— residents could apply to
the police department for a
$20 permit to shoot “animal
pests” with firearms inside
the city limits.
The fee would cover the
cost of fingerprint and back
ground checks.
The ordinance is aimed
primarily at giving citizens
a chance to shoot squirrels,
which are considered to be
a nuisance in a number of
neighborhoods.
