Plans Ham
License Class
The Tri-County Amateur
Radio Club — serving
Jackson, Banks and Hall
counties — will hold a techni
cian level ham radio licens
ing class Saturday May 9,
at 8 a.m.
The class will be held at
the Braselton Public Utilities
Building, located in down
town, behind Town Hall.
The event is open to any
one who wants to become
a ham radio operator. The
one-day event will end in
the FCC test being admin
istered to all students for
their official license.

Jackson Gets
Stimulus Money
For Food, Shelter
Jackson County has been
awarded $18,263 in feder
al stimulus funds through
the Emergency Food and
Shelter Program (EFSP).
Federal funds totaling $ 100
million were made available
to the EFSP, through the
American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act of 2009
(ARRA), to bring immedi
ate relief to communities
to address unemployment,
poverty and other needs in
light of the economic cli
mate faced by our country.
Georgia received a total of
$3.2 million in such funds.
The EFSP grant funds will
be used to supplement food,
shelter, rent, mortgage and
utility assistance programs
for people with non-disaster
related emergencies.
The grants were
announced by the U.S.
Department of Homeland
Security’s Federal
Emergency Management
Agency (FEMA).
Lunch & Learn
Session Set At
Noon Monday
Owners of small business
es can get a clearer idea of
what’s available from local
banks at an April 20 event
sponsored by the Jackson
County Area Chamber of
Commerce.
The noon lunch — which
costs $15 for members and
$25 for nonmembers — will
take place at Beef O’Brady’s
in Jefferson. It’s part of the
chamber’s “lunch and learn’’
series.
“We’ll talk about what a
bank can do to encourage
growth of small business in
the county,’’ explained Larry
Cole, president of First
Commerce Bank, which is
the event sponsor.
The program will also
include information about
changes in Small Business
Administration products,
Cole said.

Winners Sat.
Jackson County
Community Outreach
(JCCO) will announce the
winners of its seventh annu
al county-wide essay contest
with a reception at the First
United Methodist Church,
Commerce, Saturday, April
18.
Prize money will be
awarded. A motivational,
inspirational guest will be
the speaker on the program.
A total of 538 essays were
entered in the contest.
There will be a total of
nine winners placing first,
second, third or fourth place
in the elementary, middle
and high school level.

March 19, 1944, as German
troops began the depor
tation of approximately
450,000 Jews from Hungary,
three fourths of whom were
murdered in Nazi extermi
nation camps.
“The concert will memo
rialize the victims of the
Holocaust and is dedicated
to its survivors,’’ said Todd
Chandler, conductor. “We
hope that you will join us in
remembering voices from
the past and those who still
survive today.’’
