Middle School
Sets Orientation
Kings Bridge Middle
School will host a parent-stu
dent orientation for upcom
ing sixth graders from 6 to
7:30 p.m. Thursday, April
30.
After a hot dog supper
at 6 p.m., parents will meet
with staff members, hear
about programs offered
at the middle school and
tour the school. Clubs
will be discussed as well
as Connections schedules,
bus schedules, after-school
socials and other events
that occur throughout the
school year. Parents can
also register their child for
band or chorus.
All Benton Elementary
School and South Jackson
Elementary School parents
of upcoming sixth graders
are encouraged to attend.
Nominees Being
Sought For
Teen Awards
Nominations are being
accepted for a Youth
Citizenship Award and a
Youth Service Award to rec
ognize exceptional young
people in Jackson County.
Teen Connection, a
Family Connection task
force, is soliciting nomina
tions for the two awards
to be announced dur
ing its upcoming Family
Engagement Day. Family
Engagement Day is a com
munity fair showcasing
activities, programs, and
volunteer opportunities
available to the families and
youth of Jackson County.
The event will be held at the
Commerce Civic Center
Saturday, May 9, between
10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
The Youth Citizenship
Award will recognize a youth
who has overcome obsta
cles or made great strides
in reaching a personal goal.
The Youth Service Award
will recognize a young per
son who has made efforts
to improve his or her com
munity. The deadline for
nominations is April 29.
“We feel it is very impor
tant to support and recog
nize young people who are
making an effort to better
themselves and/or Jackson
County” said Niki Adams,
executive director of Family
Connection and one of
the sponsors of the May 9
event.
Residents may nominate a
young person age 13-18 for
either award online at www.

Each winner will receive a
$50 savings bond.

Jackson Gets
Grant To
Promote Health
Jackson County has been
selected by the Association
County Commissioners of
Georgia (ACCG) to receive
one of 39 Employee Health
Promotion and Wellness
Incentive Grants awarded
statewide to promote work
site programs designed to
enhance the health and
wellness of county employ
ees and family members.
Awards are made to mem
bers of the ACCG - Group
Health Benefits Program
(GHBP), underwritten by
Blue Cross Blue Shield of
Georgia, based on a coun
ty’s commitment to employ
ee health and demonstrated
collaboration with other
community groups and
organizations engaged in
health promotion.
As part of the grant pro
cess, the county designated
a health promotion leader to
develop a workplace health
promotion action plan and
to attend Local Government
Risk Management Services’
(LGRMS) High Impact
Health and Wellness train
ing session.
Employees will be offered
a confidential health assess
ment program using a
Health Risk Appraisal, with
blood pressure screening
and health improvement
feedback.
Debbie Mooney, health
promotion leader said, “We
are pleased that the ACCG
recognizes our interest in
employee health and in
managing health care costs.
This grant will help us pro
vide new programs to our
staff and their families.”
Haste Of Banks'
Planned For
Saturday, May 2
A Taste of Banks County
will be held from noon to
5 p.m. on Saturday, May 2,
at the high school stadium,
located at 1486A Historic
Homer Highway in Homer.
Food from local restau
rants will be featured. A fun
zone with activities for chil
dren will also be included,
as will live entertainment all
afternoon.
Admission is free but tick
ets will be sold for food
and some of the children’s
activities. Twenty tickets
will cost $10.

Banks School
System Makes
Deal For Diesel
The Banks County Board
Of Education unanimously
agreed Monday night to
pursue an agreement with
Bartow County on the pur
chase of its diesel fuel.
Clay Hobbs, Banks
County School System
Transportation director,
presented the proposed
contract to the board for
consideration. Hobbs said
the school system had to
be able to consume 42,000
gallons of diesel fuel per
month in order to get a
contract price. He added
that the system can commit
to 7,000 gallons per month,
plus Bartow’s 35,000, Hobbs
said.
Greg Smallwood, DJ
Petroleum, Gainesville, is
working with Hobbs on
this contract. Hobbs said
80 percent of the price will
be set through the contract
and 20 percent will be at the
market price.
‘The price we would be
looking at today would be
$1.80 to $1.85 per gallon,”
Hobbs said.
Banks County would be
committing to 70,000 gal
lons over a 10-month period
from August 2009 to May
2010, Hobbs said.
12-Year Old
Killed In
ATV Accident
HOMER - A 12-year-old
Banks County girl was killed
Friday afternoon in all-ter
rain vehicle (ATV) accident
on West Coker Road, Alto.
A 15-year-old male passen
ger on the ATV was injured
in the accident.
Breanna Michelle Mann
Campbell was pronounced
dead at the scene of the
accident. The passenger
suffered broken bones. The
vehicle landed on top of
Campbell, officials said.
