Madison Co.
Man Gets Stay
Of Execution
Madison County’s William
Mark Mize was scheduled
to die Tuesday night.
But the Georgia Supreme
Court granted a stay of
execution hours before the
7 p.m. lethal injection. The
court ruled that Athens
Superior Court Judge
Lawton Stephens had not
issued an official ruling on
Mize’s motion for a new
trial. The stay of execution
will expire 24 hours after
Stephens’ ruling.
Mize, a white suprema
cist, was sentenced to
death for the 1994 murder
of Eddie Tucker, a white fol
lower who was fatally shot
after he failed to burn down
what Mize considered to
be a crack house in nearby
Athens.
The 52-year-old Mize’s
attorneys say the execution
should be delayed due to
lingering doubt over Mize’s
role in the murder, but pros
ecutors say he’s an unre
pentant killer.
Mize would be the sec
ond person put to death in
Georgia this year.
Mize’s execution was
scheduled to take place
at the Georgia Diagnostic
and Classification Prison
in Jackson, southeast of
Atlanta.

Dills served as the town

deputy clerk in the county
commissioners’ office, was
indicted on two counts
of felony theft by taking.
Spence was arrested last

City To Back
'Affordable'
Housing Project
Jefferson city leaders
offered support Monday
night to plans to locate a
64-unit “affordable housing’’
complex in the city.
In a 4-1 vote, the coun
cil approved a resolution
supporting CRT Realty &
Development Inc.’s plans
for a 64-unit development,
Oconee Overlook, on
Hwy. 11. The city initially
approved the project in 2005
for 160 units. The developer
is seeking affordable hous
ing tax credits and HOME
funding through the Georgia
Department of Community
Affairs for the project.
Councilman Bosie Griffith
voted against this resolu
tion, while the other council
members supported it.
Airport Panel
Looks For
Service Strategy
The Jackson County
Airport Authority is looking
for guidance on how to best
deliver service to its cus
tomers when the extended
runway opens in July.
During last Tuesday’s
monthly meeting, authority
members discussed service
delivery strategy and how
to provide full airport ser
vice once the runway proj
ect is completed.
Airport manager Bob
Stapleton said authority
members discussed if an
outside provider should
come in on a lease to run
a fixed base operation, or
if the authority should go
back to the commissioners
and see if the county will
fund hiring people to pro
vide service themselves.
Stapleton said authority
chairman Shannon Sell
and authority member
John Buchanan will meet
with county commission
chairman Hunter Bicknell
to get his opinion on the
matter.
Also at last week’s meet
ing, the authority voted to
reimburse Dry Pond LLC
for the cost incurred in pre
paring the site for their new
hanger. Stapleton said it was
the airport’s responsibility
to prepare the site by rough
grading. The cost, approxi
mately $11,000, will be paid
back by an abatement of
Dry Pond’s monthly rent.
