• Eagles Basketball Camp Coming Up In June
• City Parks And Recreation Announces Summer Activities
The Commerce Parks and
Recreation Department has
announced its schedule of
summer activities for the ben
efit of the youth of the com
munity.
Many of the activities are
contingent upon continued
interest shown through reg
istration. Unless otherwise
noted, registration for all
activities listed may be made
at the Recreation Office at
American Veterans Memorial
Park on Carson Street, week
days from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00
p.m. Registration is first come,
first serve basis until each
activity is filled. For additional
information, call 706-335-3236.
Updates will be posted on the
Commerce city government

Recreation Swimming
The American Veterans
Memorial Park Aquatics
Center will be open to the
public from Monday, May 25,
at 1:00 p.m. through Friday,
July 31. Weather permitting;
the pool will be open Monday
through Saturdays from 1:00
p.m. until 5:00 p.m. and closed
on Sundays. Daily admission
is $1.50 for pre-school through
high school youth and $3 for
adults. Season passes for indi
viduals and families are avail
able at the Recreation Office.
The pool is available for pri
vate party rentals on Saturday
evenings in June and July. Call
for information.
There is no wading pool.
Young children not potty-
trained must wear air-tight rub
ber pants or diapers designed
especially for swimming. All
children age 8 and under
must be actively supervised
by an individual 16 or older.
Swimsuits are required to enter
the pool; street clothes are not
allowed.
Competitive Swimming
Deadline to register is May
29.
The Tiger Shark Swim Club
is composed of two basic divi
sions.
The "Minnows" group is
designed for 5 and 6-year-olds
and functions as the entry level
activity of the swim team. To
participate, a child must turn
5 prior to June 1, 2009 and
have successfully completed
swim lessons before register
ing. Entry into North Georgia
Swim League competition is
optional.
The Tiger Shark swim team
includes youth ages 7-18 who
already know how to swim.
Participants in this group must
be 7 or older prior to June
1, 2009. Entry into the North
Georgia Swim League and the
GRPA District Swim Meet is
optional. Team members also
have the opportunity to qual
ify for the GRPA State Swim
Meet.
Registration costs for
Commerce residents is $70
while non-city residents will
pay $90.
Swimming Classes
Registration is open until
spaces are filled.
There will be a five-day swim
instruction program for three
and four year olds June 29
- July 3 with daily one-hour
classes beginning at 9:45 a.m.
Registration for Commerce
residents is $40 and non-city
residents is $60.
Two separate eight-day ses
sions are available for children
ages 5-12 who do not know
how to swim. The first session
is June 1-10 (weekdays only)
and the second session will fol
low on June 15-24 (weekdays
only). Daily starting time is
9:45 a.m. for a one-hour class.
Registration fee: city residents,
$50; non-city, $70.
Water Aerobics
No advance registration is
required.
This is a water exercise class
for adult men and women
that is particularly beneficial
to individuals with arthritis,
muscular disease, osteoporo
sis, heart disease, and recov
ery from joint replacement as
well as other disabling injuries.
Water aerobics strengthens all
muscles and joints without the
stress, stiffness and soreness
which accompany land exer
cise programs.
Workouts will require partici
pants to use their arms, legs,
hips and neck and will elevate
the heart rate through the buoy
ancy of the water.
Experienced water aerobics
instructor Sharon Pruitt will
lead the class on Mondays,
Wednesdays and Fridays
at 11:00 am. beginning
Wednesday, May 27. The class
will be ongoing through early
August. Cost is $3 per class at
the gate. No children will be
admitted to or allowed present
during class.
Champ Chaney
Basketball Camp
Registration is limited.
The camp will stress the
fundamentals of the game to
strengthen players’ foundation
al skills. Former Commerce
Middle School coach Sam
Chaney is the instructor.
Chaney coached school teams
for 31 years, also serving for
seven years on the staff of
instructors for a basketball
camp managed by former LA
Lakers player Tracy Murray.
The camp is designed for girls
and boys who are rising fourth
graders through rising eighth
graders. The camp will run
10:00 am. until noon July 20-24
at the middle school gym.
Registration fee for city resi
dents is $40, non-city is $60.
Softball Camp
The registration fee is $60
with a non-refundable $10
deposit due by May 15. The
balance will be due on May
26. Checks should be made
payable to Pam Canup.
Designed for girls who are
rising third graders through ris
ing eighth graders, the camp
will teach the fundamentals of
fielding, hitting, throwing and
base running. Participants must
bring a glove, hat, cleats and a
bat. Everyone will receive a
camp T-shirt.
The camp is scheduled for
May 26-29 from 6:00 to 9:00
pm. daily. Instructors will be
composed of Commerce High
School softball coach Pam
Canup and current and former
CHS players.
Baseball Camp
The registration fee is $60
with a non-refundable deposit
of $30 due by Friday, May 29.
The balance is due on June 8.
For youth ages 9-14, the camp
is scheduled June 8 through
June 11 from 9:00 a.m. until
noon daily.
Players will be taught the fun
damentals of fielding, hitting,
throwing and base running in
a fun atmosphere. Players will

The Future Eagles basketball camp will

from 9 a.m, to 3:30 p.m,
The cost is $100 and $75 for each addi
tional sibling.
Each camper will receive a t-shirt; lunch

The camp will be run by members of the
East Jackson Comprehensive High School
coaching staff and by East Jackson players,
The focus will on improving fundamental
basketball skills, Daily competitions and
awards will be given.

• Commerce-Jefferson Football Reunion, Aug. 28
A Commerce-Jefferson
football reunion is being
planned for the Friday, Aug.
28 game between the cross
river rivals at Memorial
Stadium in Jefferson.
That will be the season
opener for both teams.
Former Dragon Benny
Tompkins, who played 1954-
56, is the initiator of the
event and would like for all
former Jefferson football
players from 1947-1959 to par
ticipate, 1947 was Jefferson’s
inaugural football season,

Tompkins would also like
as many former Commerce
players who played against
Jefferson from 1950 through
1959 to take part in the
reunion as well.
Commerce had a football
reunion a few years ago for
former Tigers who played
during the 1940s.

Cook, will stress the funda
mentals of basketball and
work individually with the
participants to improve their
skills in basketball. McCurley
has vast experience and
knowledge of basketball. He
has won four state champion
ships and coached teams at
Gardner-Webb University. In
addition, the girls will receive
instruction from college play
ers who will visit the camp,

will stress ball handling, shoot
ing techniques, passing and
defensive skills, The partici
pants will be grouped by age
and ability. Included in the fee
is a camp T-shirt and awards
given for competitions.

have partnered together to bring you the remaining pieces
of the Commerce High School Gymnasium.
After its demolition on Monday, April 20, 2009 only a
precious few bricks remain of the Commerce High School
Gymnasium. In a fundraising effort to help create a
science lecture series, build a certified natural wildlife
habitat and upgrade the school’s science lab, the bricks
are now up for sale.
Each brick comes complete with a signed Certificate of
Authenticity. The supply is very limited and will be sold on
a first come first served basis.
