“Pat” Mathis, 78, died

her residence.
A native of Jackson
County, she was a daugh
ter of the late Lon and
Minnie Burt Lee. She had
resided in Barrow County
most of her life and was
a member of Bethabra
Baptist Church. She was a
homemaker.
Survivors include her

Harden Odom, 82, died
Thursday, May 21, 2009.
Born in Chatham County,
N.C., he was
the son of the
late Chafin
A. and Irene
Harden Odom. A mem
ber of the St. Anthony’s
Episcopal Church, he
became a member of
Winder Lions Club on
October 1, 1959, and had
perfect attendance for 45
years. He served as past
president and held various
other offices. Mr. Odom
was a long time cook for
the bi-monthly meetings,
where his signature dishes
were fried chicken and
strawberry shortcake. He
was a World War II Navy
Veteran and a teacher for
30 plus years. A gradu
ate of Bradwell Institute
in Hinesville, Teacher
College’s of Statesboro,
and received his masters
from the University of
Georgia. He was past pres
ident of Jug Tavern Senior
Citizens Golf Association.
Mr. Odom was preceded in
death by a brother, Albert
Odom; and sister, Mae O.
Whittle.
Survivors include his
wife, Maggie Odom;
daughter, Barbara Odom;
daughter and son-in-law,
BeckyandKennethRogers;
grandchildren. Rusty
and Casey Rogers, all of
Winder; brother, Alton C.

the last of 15 children. She
lived in Hall County for
51 years and retired from
Leece-Neville with 28
years of service. Mrs. Sisk
was preceded in death by
her husband, William Sisk;

and sisters.

He was a veteran, having
served in the United States
Army during World War II.

lived in Gainesville most
of her life, and worked at
Pirkle’s Cafe as a cook for
many years. Mrs. Sullens
was preceded in death by
her parents; and a sister,
Lucille Baker.
Survivors include sons,

and Harold Sullens,
Gainesville; a brother, J.C.
Smith, Bentonville, Ark.;

great-grandchildren; and

Robert “Jack” Tatum,
92, died Friday, May 22,
2009, at his residence at
Magnolia Hills Assisted
Living in Demorest.
Born on March 26, 1917,
in Palmetto, he was the son
of the late Robert D. and
Florence Jackson Tatum,
and was preceded in death
by his wife,
Martha Edna
Tomlinson.
He was a grad
uate of Mercer University,
Macon, and the Southern
Baptist Theological
Seminary, Louisville,
Ky., and was ordained as
a Baptist minister by the
Rahmah Baptist Church
in Palmetto in 1937.
Churches he served include
the Clarkesville Baptist
Church, Clarkesville, First
Baptist Church, Cornelia,
First Baptist Church,
Buford, Prince Avenue
Baptist Church, Athens,
and the Crawford Avenue
Baptist Church, Augusta.
Following his retirement,
he served as interim pas
tor of several churches in
Habersham and Stephens
County. During World War
II, he served as a United
States Army Chaplain in
the European Theater.
Following the war he
served in the United States
Army Reserves, retiring as
a Lieutenant Colonel.
Survivors include a
niece, Jane T. Washington,
Newnan; and a neph
ew, David E. Tatum Jr.,
Palmetto.
Memorial services were
held Sunday, May 24, at the
Bethlehem Baptist Church
with the Revs. Tommy
Stowe and Furman Lewis
officiating. Burial was in
the church cemetery.

1922, she was the daughter

Alta Beadles. She and her
late husband, Charles, lived
in Jefferson for 35 years
before moving to Florida.
She was a graduate of the
University of Idaho and
worked for the American
Red Cross during World
War II as a home casework
er. She was a retired social
worker for the Georgia
Department of Family
and Children’s Services,
was a member of the First
United Methodist Church
of Jefferson, the Quilters,
the United Methodist
Women, the Esther Circle,
and the Stan Escoe Sunday
School Class. Mrs. Vernon
was preceded in death
by her beloved husband
of 62 years; a son, David
R. Vernon; and sisters,
Delores Jaquish and Joyce
Adams.
Survivors include a
daughter and son-in-law,
Betsy and John Harrington,
Leesburg, Fla.; grand
daughters, Suzanne (Lane)
Godsey and Jessica Vernon,
Arden, N.C., and Kathleen
Gurley, Atlanta; grandsons,

ber of Cornelia Christian
Church, where she served
as the church’s food ser
vice coordinator for many
years, and was retired from
Chicopee Manufacturing
Company with 35 years of
dedicated service.

Hannas, all of Cornelia;
son and daughter-in-law,
